We all paid money for it.I understand what you mean, and that's a part of the reason why I don't afk myself. There are many people trying to play and they deserve the chance. But that's exactly why I'm also not against people who afk; in the end, they're also people who want to play. I can only assume that if someone goes as far as leaving their character afk for the whole night, it might be because they know they won't be able to log in at a time where the server is not full. I won't be the one telling them "tough luck. Just don't play"... ^^a;
I have to disagree about the "if you don't do it, others will anyway" statement. While that's always a possibility, and there are people like that out there, I like to give others the benefit of the doubt. Whenever I log out for the night, I like to believe I just gave someone else a chance to play, and they'll do the same thing when they're done playing.Â
It's all about being less selfish and trying to get everyone in who wants to play. We're a community, we should act like it.

I simply understand that everyone wants to play, and thus they'll do what they can.
(And just for the record, I just came back from lunch and now it seems absolutely impossible to log in).
