Someone told me years ago that the first sign that an MMO is failing is when they have to condense their servers. True or not, it's that reputation that every MMO wants to avoid at all costs and very few successfully avoid. I think that's what they are trying to do, honestly.
TOR was the same way at launch. People screamed and bitched and screamed for them to open new servers and they finally had to do just that. It was, what, a year before they had to turn around and condense their servers again? Less than that, I think. It is for that reason that SE is trying to open the bare minimum of servers in that first month. Because they know that after the first month, the number of subscribers will drop off. And they can't afford the reputation of having to condense servers again only a month after launch.
