Most likely because romance is often associated with sexual intimacy and... that can get awkward with that level of size difference. Of course, there are a variety of creative ways you can go about it in spite of the size difference, but I suppose most people just don't want to go there. It's sort of silly, when you consider dwarfism, though I suppose lalas' childlike faces don't help much (while people with dwarfism don't really look like small children).
Personally, I don't see why not.
