Sheesh, you guys are really bringing up all of the points I wanted to go into. My design has been with a tabletop system in mind this entire time, as they're just simple to implement into these types of roleplay. That's exactly what I'm bringing into this MMO, but the idea is to keep the system as minimalistic, yet dynamic as possible.

The idea is to provide a standardized form of combat that both sides are agreeing to through participation. It's a d20 system where two combatants choose from a small list of preset abilities, using roleplay to show their actions.

The fights would need to be moderated, but I would want the system finalized (at least on paper) before anything else. On that note, I want to post it here, but I don't want people to steal my stuff -.-

No offense.

But meh, you guys seem alright.

SpoilerObjective: Utilizing a D20 system, two player's face off in roleplay combat. Picking one offensive and defensive ability per round, reduce the opponent's health from 5 to 0.

Mechanics:

-Attack and defense success is determined by D20 rolls, the greater number succeeding. Offensive Abilities apply their mechanics when successful, Defensive Abilities apply their mechanics regardless.

-Critical Actions occur when a player's roll is triple their opponent's roll. These actions grant unique factors specific to their ability.

Combat: Beginning with a roll to decide combat order, players use emotes to roleplay the outcome of their rolled combat actions.

-The Attacking Player (who wins an initial D20 roll) is awarded the Preemptive Strike, allowing them to pick an Offensive Action at +2 Accuracy.

-The Attacking Player emotes their attempt at an attack, ending their post with their Offensive Action in brackets, also /telling their action to the Battle Moderator.

-The Defending Player (who loses the initial D20 roll) sends both their Defensive Action and Offensive to the Battle Moderator via /tell, waiting for the results before emoting their reaction to the attack and their attempt at a follow up attack, ending their post with both chosen actions in brackets.

-The original Attacking Player repeat the Defending Player's phase, and combat continues in this fashion, alternating emotes and /tells to the Battle Moderator, until one player has taken 5 Damage
.

Offensive Abilities:

[Strike] 1 Damage. (Critical: 2 Damage)
[Feign] -3 Enemy Defense Next Round (Critical: -5 Enemy Defense)
[Break] Negates Enemy Defensive Ability (Critical: 1 Damage)

Defensive Abilities:

[Evade] +2 Accuracy (Critical: +3 Accuracy)
[Guard] +3 Defense, Negates Enemy Critical (Critical: Negates Enemy Critical Next Round)
[Counter] -3 Defense, (Critical*: 1 Damage)

*Counter Critical Requires Double Opponent's Roll, Down From Triple.

My hope is that people participating will only need to know the actions they need to pick (which could maybe be in-game mailed to participants), keeping their ability to participate relatively basic, while still seeming a bit more than straight emote combat. This is my first write up. Think you guys can help me?
