Alright, here are my opinions on this topic. I'm drawing ideas from the MMO's I've played extensively (only FFXI), and from tabletop RPGs that I've played for years (DnD and Shadowrun).
1. What Constitutes RP?
1. What Constitutes RP?
- I believe that the essence of role-playing is more of a personal choice to what it is, and therefore should be left to the direction of the groups that come out of this coalition. It is a good idea none-the-less to incorporate a broad definition for our etiquette section, with possibly a minor dis-clamor that states that this definition varies from group to group. I propose the following definition; Role-playing: To act in such a way that makes it believable that the character is a unique individual pertaining to their current setting. Ex: A person would not act out as a cyborg in an old-westernized setting because it doesn't mesh correctly with what is happening.[/list:u]
2. How to define IC and OOC?- The challenge here is when switching between the two in short durations. I assume that most people can tell when people are out of character based on context. Ex. An IG character would not talk about the mechanics or the game, RL issues, or having to go to the bathroom, though the last one could easily be incorporated into IC. But if there needs to be some sort of designation then I would like to see enclosed text (){}[]. I would prefer that ** be left open for emotions and actions. Ex: *Sparks feels sad* or *Sparks runs toward the armory*.[/list:u]
3. Types of Role-Playing?- Casual Role-Player: A role-player whom enjoys spending the majority of their time in a game being unrestrained by the restrictions of communicating 'in character'. They will role-play however if they view it as not hampering to their personal progress at the current time or find it more enjoyable than what they are doing currently.
- Moderate Role-Player: A role-player whom enjoys spending the majority of their time in a game acting as their sprite, avatar, or character. They know though that it is perfectly acceptable to break in-game dialogue if something occurs that they need or want to talk 'out of character'. They will also act out circumstances that game mechanics do not support. Ex. Jack lost a limb, however; his character as seen by everyone else is fully functional.
- Hardcore Role-Player: A role-player whom enjoys spending all of their time in a game acting as their sprite, avatar, or character. It is not at all exceptable to go 'out of character', unless extreme circumstances occur. Abbreviations are not allowed as a person would say "I'll be right back, I need to go the restroom", not "brb, wc". Hardcore players will also abide by the game mechanics. This meaning yes, they will lose a limb of their character, but only if the game supports such an action to do so.
- Free-lance Role-Player: I actually have no clue to what this is, I've never heard of it. All I can think of is somebody who will participate in role-playing if they are enticed to do so with either coin or items.[/list:u]
4. How does one’s environment and surroundings fit into RP?- I am unsure of what this question is asking. Are we talking about an individual's real environment, digital environment of the world, or certain functions (such as chatting)? I need just a tad bit more information before I am able to opinionate on it.[/list:u]
