I admit that I have a bad habit of barging into small gatherings and potentially wrecking their Serious Businessâ„¢, but I'm very obliging when someone /tells me immediately that their current situation can't really involve complete strangers in it. I've been in that situation before many times, and it's completely true that sometimes you're simply unable to meet-n-greet when the world, your friends, you family are in mortal danger.
My character pretty much considers herself more important than you, be default. So her usual tactic is to find a free chair at a table already occupied by people engaged in discussion, sit herself down without introduction, pour herself a glass of water and sink into a notebook, while all eyes at the table widen at the rudeness. If they point out the table is occupied, she'll respond that she doesn't mind in some throwaway manner, and that the party is free to move. It gets a pleasant mixture of responses, from death-threats to outrage to potential romantic interludes. For a character as antisocial as Sil'tel you do have to go out of your way to involve yourself and make an impression.
Hey, at the end of the day, you have to respect that a lot of people, myself included, get the most enjoyment out of feeling part of something larger. And if that means a world-ending catastrophe plot where only a few can solve that problem, so be it. Stories like that can get your blood racing, and unfortunately there's often little time to favor the newcomer. All I'd suggest is that you don't forget to make some allowances in your quieter time to be more open. The last thing you want is to cut yourself off from amazing new RPers because you were far too busy with your own thing.
I waffled too much during that. I like waffles..
