It's not fair to invite someone in your conversation and then start talking about things they have no knowledge about or have previously had no involvement in. Take the time to explain the situation to them and catch them up if you truly want them to get involved. Otherwise, they have no real way of participating, and they sit there feeling like a third (fourth, fifth) wheel. Many people will happily get involved in your RP/plots if only you extend to them a simple hook.Give them something their characters might care about or be interested in.
+1 Tier, Sil'tel (I like waffles too), and especially Oak. ^ So much this. This is my biggest pet peeve in rp. Being invited to join a group, or rping with someone, and all they can talk about are the great adventures they shared together. GIVE ME SOMEBLOODY CONTEXT PEOPLE!! You've given me absolutely no reason to care ICly or OOCly, I need to care about you, the character, before I give two bits about your exploits.
The counterargument I hear sooo many times is 'I'm not here to hold hands'. Noooo.... you're not. But you are responsible for giving others a reason to actually want to interact with you, andself-glamorization and/or confusing the hells out of them (and me, OOCly), does not accomplish this.
