How did you approach them and how did they respond exactly?
If it was something along the lines of "my character is a just not a great guy and I'm depicting him this way to illustrate that" then I can see the need for tolerating it and/or removing yourself from the situation if you can't handle the content - though I admit that a little limitation is necessary in public RP, and a light touch is often enough to get the point across. My own character is a bit of a jerk and I make it a point to demonstrate that yes, he really is one sometimes.
Also, this game does provide a profanity filter. It is a tool designed to prevent you seeing anything definitively offensive, and I notice that fairly often people flat out forget it even exists.
If they attacked you personally for simply opening a dialogue then they just need to be blisted.
EDIT: Nevermind, I see that you did specify how they responded. I say either use the chat filter, remove yourself from RP that they are present in, or blist. I feel like just turning on the chat filter is likely the best solution, but that's just me.
