An interesting question. I do think its worth looking at your character carrying multiple foci such as a wand for Conjury, a one handed wepaon for what ever THM uses and a book for Arcanist. That way you could just swap between the weapons to get the desired effect. I'll say this, I've been looking for plausible way to RP a Blue Mage for a while now and if its possible to make a work around for Red Mage then I still have a glimmer of hope!
