I have to agree with what Sastra said. I'm not the sort of person who enjoys approaching strangers (to put it lightly) but I forced myself to do it anyway when it comes to RP. It helps if there's a hook to bring you in, e.g. someone's reading a book and you, as a mage, might be interested to know what it's about. Start small and it'll get easier over time.
I don't know of any groups either but you're always welcome to approach my character! She's an arcanist, although has some interest in conjury.
