I really don't like getting involved in these kinds of threads, but if Askier, Kahn'a, Osric, or anyone else involved in the event is getting disheartened, then I feel I should do what I can to help them.
I think the scope of the damage is getting blown way out of proportion. A few hundred people die in a city the size of Ul'dah is barely a drop in the pool. I think it would be reasonable to assume Ul'dah has a population of 50,000 or so, maybe even more. If say 600 people died as a result, that's -barely- a percent of the population. In a city like Ul'dah, people are being murdered weekly/dying of starvation/dying of disease/dying of beastmen attacks/dying from bandit attacks. There are so many ways that people can die on a daily basis in and around Ul'dah, that this sort of thing would be blown over fairly quickly, especially given the incredibly fast response time of fixing the problem. There has not been a change in the status quo, within a week everything will be back to normal.
While I can sympathize with the idea of not wanting to to feel forced to accept or ignore something you're not crazy about, it's something each of us has to do every time we RP. Every decision another player makes us do the same thing, albeit on a smaller scale. What do you do when you encounter someone who's decision you disagree with? This is no different, save that there are a bunch of people involved instead of a smaller number.
At the end of the day, all I can say is this: We each pay to play this game, we each have a right to play this game in a way that makes it the most fun for us.
