Ran into this in a sparring match that went out control between two dark knights, one not in her full faculties, ended up rolling a 1 against someone else's 20. At first I was kind of concerned with the result of it, but it helped provide a lot of variance in outcomes to work with. like mentioned above, use the rule of cool.
As for what happened in my situation. the attacker hit the defender so good it ruined her pauldroncoat and all but ended the match, with an outcome the attacker wasn't expecting and was in a rush to heal when she snapped out of it. later the defender changed her look since the pauldroncoat was still a mess, and the attacker decided to persue a different path to protecting her friends.
