Obviously, there has to be at least one adult that you;re character was influenced by when they were young, either of the relationship be positive or negative.

The intention of this thread is to generally show a basis as to how you're character is who he or she is based on their interactions with their mentors or adult figure's.

I will go first.

For Inessa, her mentor and father figure was a Elezen man who hailed from Coerthas named Phalanx. An Ex-Ishgardian Dragon knight who taught Inessa the art of the Dragoon, honor, her sense of justice, loyalty and contributed the most to her overall character development. He was a die-hard white knight, who believed that a death fighting for those who are being preyed upon by villains was a worthy one as it was a symbol of undying justice and by being felled, others would rise up and take the cause of justice with them. A very noble person, with noble intention's and following his creed into death. He perished during the battle of Carteneau when the lesser moon fell and his body was never retrieved, believed to be burnt to ash when Bahamut layed waste to Eorzea. There are people who question if he really died since no corpse was found but his lack of appearance after the battle led people to believe he perished.

Berrod can only remember the last three (possibly four by now) years of his life in clear detail, so there aren't many figures for him to draw from. Two however, stand out clearly.

One is the merchant who took him in and nursed him back to health after the head injury that robbed him of his memory, and the other is Horace Rook -- a man who provided him with the first step toward his progress along the Monk's path.

Averill's father, Dawson, was a decidedly negative influence on the wanderer. From a young age he had no reason to want or earn anything in life, and drifted through education on his father's status. When Averill was finally pushed by his father to join the Arcanists, apathy turned to resentment, and he fled.

That same night, he was found by the Roegadyn who gave him the courage to live as a vagrant; an Adventurer by the name of Rooks. In exchange for Averill's story, Rooks challenged every belief that he had once held dear, moulding him more over the course of a night than Dawson had managed in nineteen years. Rooks taught him how to hunt and survive on the road, and to this day Averill bears the surname Rooks to honour his saviour.

After the Calamity while Coatleque spent three years as a brothel slave, there was a Seeker girl named Sapphire who took pity on her. She saw that Coatleque had some measure of strength and decided to mentor her, teaching her how to survive in that environment.

Sapphire taught Coatleque how to speak properly as an upper-class citizen, to hide her accent, and how to read and write. She also taught her how to present herself, apply various makeups, to pick simple locks, and some minor slight-of-hand tricks. Coatleque received her somewhat exotic name from Sapphire to use as a cover to protect her real name, but the Keeper mostly just called her "Red" because of her hair.

She did all of this because she had her own faith in Nymeia that she would not forever be held hostage in that environment. It was this faith that was transferred to Coatleque, and is what made her the woman she is today. Luckily this faith paid off as Sapphire was able to escape the brothel after eleven long years, a mere few weeks before it was raided by the Syndicate. She revealed her true name to Coatleque beforehand, a sign that she was finally able to return to her normal life. Coatleque has not seen her friend F'Lierre since that night, and wants to assume she was able to return to her tribe in peace.

A major element of L'yhta's character is her relationship with her master, Robert Fletcher, and the rest of the Wizards' Choir (the previous incarnation of the Ivory Tower). Before she met him, she was a runaway teenager with poor prospects and a shrinking gil purse. He took her in, gave her a place to stay, and along with the other Wizards, trained her in the Disciplines of Magic over the years after the Calamity. If she'd never met him, she'd be dead or worse. It's safe to say some of what drives her is honoring their memory, and the fact that they were killed by Sahagin is why she reserves considerable hatred for the "fishbacks" and looks down upon beastmen in general.

Ulrich Mynhier - Erik's father, an early influence on him. He's based on my EQ character from back in the day.

Heather "Fortemps" Mynhier - Erik's mother, and spiritual center. His faith comes from her, as does his unique style as the calm and controlled highlander. She's based on my religious teacher, a person I knew a long while ago.

Ser Juliette Monroe - The Sultansworn who was Erik's trainer, and overall mentor. She passed away in the cataclysm. She is based upon my friend's character in FF11 of the same name. She was out guild leader and a pretty rad rper.

Tellah Delacroix - Erik's primary tutor for his entire childhood, he is responsible for Erik's intelligence, and acted as father figure.

Eva's primary role model is a Wildwood elezen fellow named Pater who was friendly with her father (it has been suggested but never directly stated that they fought together for Ishgard) and gave her employment at his book shop for 11 years. From him she has learned that things aren't as important as people, and how to read moods and a lot of interpersonal skills she never really possessed in her earlier life.

She also eventually came to look up to her father after his passing. He served as a captain of a particular batallion of dragoon knights of Ishgard and as a single parent tried to imprint a lot of values and traditions. Much of this was not well-received until his health began to deteriorate though. Earlier in her life she did not have any role-models and her teenage years in particular were difficult for this lack of guidance.

Hmm...this is tricky. If I had to pin a few old ones down for Franz, NaelÂ Van Darnus would be up on the role-model's list. At least, before Dalamud. Like any other properly educated Garlean, he would have been indoctrinated by wanting to support the Emporer and join the military to expand Garlemad's territories.

Backstory fragment:
Franz (because I've yet to release his actual name) grew up with family in the hospitality sector, primarily inns and restaurants, some of which were later converted into places for the military to eat and sleep. He idolized the idea of the soldier's life, and when he was old enough to join, he did.

Once joining, he was put under control of a girl younger than he was. And she kicked his arse. Repeatedly. "She" was born to a family that had been known for its military prowess, "he" had not. From an OOC perspective, she definitely mentored him. Maybe a touch of special treatment in the form of more work, or extra laps to run in training. With enough work, he eventually made his way through the rankings and found her to be an equal. For people that know Franz ICly, he may have mentioned a "Lydia" once or twice. Wink

Would be interesting RP to see a bit of backstory for Phalanx as to why he left Ishgard and the Dragon Knights as even Inessa doesn't know.

Would certainly be an interesting angle. Eva's father was hardly a particularly agreeable individual and wound up essentially just walking away from the knighthood shortly after she was born for reasons that are intentionally left unclear (speculation ranging from his heart not being in it after his wife left all the way to rumors of him being in league with Dravanians). I have a timeline written up [albeit on another computer since I'm at work now] and would be glad to compare notes and see where perhaps they may have some sort of a link there. ^_^

Natalie was very highly influenced by her mentor. I kind of want to write out the story sometime.

When Natalie came to the city she decided to throw away everything from her old life in a tribe. Her name, her customs, her morals, all of it. She had to fill that with something, and she chose fighting. For several years, all Natalie cared about was winning, she felt she could prove herself on the sands of the Arena. Then she accidentally killed someone in the Arena, and had to sit there and accept her prize as his family ran crying into the arena. She wondered if that was all she was good for, destroying things.

Then she met someone. A retired member of the sultansworn. They eventually became friends, and almost family. She taught Natalie everything she knew about protecting people, instead of just hurting them. In the end, when the war came, she was called back into service, and through her recommendation, a hastily trained Natalie was brought into the order as well. Unfortunately the battle ended with her dying in Natalie's arms as Bahaumut razed the battlefield.

Forchetaix of the Leclerc family was a major role model for Jaques growing up. Forchetaix was the leader of the Guardians. (The name the clan gave to their protection force. Which also doubled as the clan's hunters.) Jaques wanted nothing more than to grow up and work at Forchetaix's side. Which he did when he got old enough to start training for the Guardians at fifteen. The biggest lessons he took from the man were respect, honor, fight tactics, and work ethics.
