I wanted to post something helpful but aside from it being the name of a gearset, I have no idea what an Onion Knight actually is. It seems like you want to go with the outside-from-Eorzea thing so if you don't mind that not really being a named class or job in the world, go for it.

And since your character is from a place outside of the game, Lalafell naming conventions may not apply, but what you're using very different from either of the in-game clans.

In FFXIV Onion Knights were said to be legendary soldiers of the Allagan Empire before its fall.

In other Final Fantasy games an Onion Knight is a class that is generally able to use all types of equipment but has terrible stat growth until levels 90-100 when their stat growth explodes exponentially.

Because of Shallot's interest in his Great Grandfather being an apparent Onion Knight, he wants to know more about the Allagan Empire's Onion Knights and the relics/ruins they left behind.

Shallot's great grandfather is actually from another world i/e the world of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and isn't actually a Lalafell but a Lilty, one of the races in that game who are also short like the Lalafell. Upon reaching Eorzea he is confused for an Onion Knight due to the onion-like appearance of the Lilty race.

Shallot's Great Grandfather marries a Lalafell and has children. So Shallot is a Lalafell who simply has a Lilty ancestor/Lilty blood which explains his reddish hair in addition to his proficiency with a Lance/Spear (Shallot is exclusively a Lancer/Dragoon), the main weapon of the Lilty race. How his Great Grandfather found his way to Eorzea/crossed over between worlds is purposely obscure as are other details which have simply been muddled by the passage of time.

Shallot's chocobo is named Veo Lu after the north-west region in Crystal Chronicles.

I just thought it was a neat idea.

I got myself a code for the Onion Helm (only available from a 1.0 preorder) which is his signature piece of gear and my goal is to acquire all of the Onion Armor set from the Crystal Tower much later on, which works our well because the Onion Armor set is exclusive to Lancers and Dragoons.

That photograph of Shallot's Great Grandfather was the finishing touch to the lore. Took me awhile in photoshop to get it looking just right. =)

I also purchased an Emerald Carbuncle minion to follow him around to link him to the Carbuncles of Mag Mell, another location at the end of Crystal Chronicles.

Shallot may eventually learn that the Onion Knights of ancient Allag were the clockwork automaton foot-soldiers of the Allagan Empire before the Second Reign of Xandes. While living, breathing Onion Knights may have once existed during the early years of Allag, they were later replaced by clockwork machines, and eventually "Manikins" - automatons mixed with life-like flesh made from Allag's aetherochemical experiments. You can actually see Manikin Marauders wearing the Onion Knight set in the Fractal Continuum.

As the horrors (and legends) of Allag passed into mythology during the 4th Astral Era and for the next 5000 years after its fall, the Allagans and their onion knights became little more than faerie tales. Their influence still prevalent throughout the realm, even though they were long gone. While the Allagan Empire was only proven to exist by an Ul'dahn archaeologist named Coinach some 500 years ago (a time period roughly concurrent with the popularization of the onion helm), many of Allag's truths and secrets have come to light in recent years. So going to or becoming a part of any of the Sons of Saint Coinach's dig sites might be Shallot's logical first step on his journey.

Good ol' Horned Helm Lilities- second most fashionable next to Steel Visor. Tongue

I think this is all really a matter of seeing how many holes you can find to fit the Crystal Chronicles world into your character; basically nothing has been retained from that awesome side-series of games aside from having a short and somewhat rotund character race. In terms of recreation, Lilities and Clavat are the only two easy ones; Selkie and Yuke would be too hard to get to work easily. Shallot sounds somewhat Lilitian to me, but considering that he is a mix of Lalafell and Lility in an entirely different culture far away from the original, it should not matter all too much either way.

But, er, back to the original point. I know a good chunk of CC lore, the matter is figuring out where this is going. I love the idea, (I've considered a Clavat referencing character before), but I'm going to be looking at specific ways you can get this in the game and not go as far as to begin creating canon ideas. Some people won't have an issue crossing lore, but a lot of people tend to follow lore quite heavily and it would be a good idea to find a way to explain your past within lore.

Assuming that you're going with merging the CC world into Eorzea, one issue is to consider the nature of the crystals. In CC, the crystals are either made by or maintained by Myrrh, which is essentially liquefied memories. I'm not exactly sure what Aether is or how it works, but Aetheryte seems to make a similar ghostly voice/sound sometimes, (either that, or I'm imagining it). Being as it is and assuming perhaps Myrrh and Aether are interchangeable, the chalice shouldn't serve as much more than a weak beacon. Aether-poisoning can happen as well- an event that shows up in CC:EoT (Not to mention that Sherlotte could easily be mistaken for a Miqo'te). For this manner, I would not think the chalice would be terribly alarming to anyone, especially seeing as you would likely seem to have archaeological intentions in uncovering the truth of Onion Knights.

I wouldn't know much on how to explain the change of the Carbuncles between the games, but I don't think it would be unfeasible to believe a Carbuncle may have followed your grandfather after the cleansing of Miasma- defeating something as strong as the Royal Spirits (at least, I guess that's what you could call them) is no small feat.

People could easily assume you're a simply crazed or obsessive Lalafell who has gotten too deep into speculation in the midst of researching or performing archaeology, or perhaps you appear to be just lost in your own world. I don't think your physical aspects would be anything to cause alarm for anyone (I always figured that the growth on the head was just odd hair growth patterns and not actually plantlike). I don't think the green eyes will be a terribly odd offset either; I've not been perceptive enough to find a green-eyed Lalafell NPC in game, but even if it's not naturally possible for them, you can always explain it as a glamour enchantment. Sadly, you can't get the nice sideburns or the full beard, but large facial hair doesn't seem to be prevalent in Lalafellin.

On the terms of profession, Blacksmithing, Armorsmithing, and Lancing all exist in-game, so none of that should be a problem. Being that you are the third generation of your family in Eorzea, your accent will likely have adjusted to be quite similar to everyone else's. I'd assume you would know the natural Eorzean language at this point- the old one, assuming it's any different, might even have been forgotten among your family now.

Whew...that was much more long-winded than I had intended. Keep these things in mind as you think out your character, I just think it would be beneficial if you maintained a way to keep the character within FFXIV's lore- a lot of people tend to be quick on judging about it. Regardless, I like the idea and I'm happy to find another person who seems to like the Crystal Chronicles sub-series. I hope this was helpful for your idea in some sort of way!

I actually prefer the Horned Helm Lilties over the Steel Visor style because I think their red armor looks cooler than the plain old iron armor the other Lilties wear. Also the Horned Helm with the signature Lilty hair sticking out the top looks similar to an Onion Helm further explaining why the people of Eorzea saw him and said he resembled an Onion Knight!

As for Green-eyed Lalafell, there is one that I know of. A major one, actually.

However, I chose green eyes because it's actually a Lilty trait as well, although probably a rare one. The Lilty Princess, Althea, from FFCC: The Crystal Bearers has green eyes.

But yeah, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is easily one of my favorite games ever so I was really excited to try and make a character in FFXIV that had a connection to that world. I mean you have other characters who travel between Final Fantasy realms like Gilgamesh, and he appears in FFXIV as a boss, so I say it isn't totally outside the realm of possibility that Shallot's Great Grandfather also somehow stumbled into the world of Eorzea at some point in his travels, perhaps through some chance encounter involving the crystal chalice, myrrh, and an aetheryte crystal. Afterall, aetheryte crystals are crystallized shards of aetheric mist. Perhaps a combination of the remnants of miasma, myrrh from the chalice, and the aftermath of the meteor parasite's defeat created something akin to a makeshift aetheryte crystal to aid in such an inter-dimensional trip. But such details aren't incredibly important since Shallot's Lilty lineage is supposed to be vague and slightly misunderstood to begin with. Shallot doesn't even know what a Lilty is! Liltian is just his odd last name as far as he knows.

Ah but one more cool little detail that I really love about this is that the Onion Armor in FFXIV that's obtained from the Crystal Tower actually has two orangeish-red ribbons that hang off the back and they look just like the little wing-like ribbon things that Lilties have hanging off of their backs in Crystal Chronicles. It all just syncs up so nicely.
