THREE FATES

A die rolling game for FFXIV's /random command

While games of chance are to be found at all levels of Eorzean cultures, particularly wealthy members of the old Uldan nobility and mining concerns were known for flaunting their wealth above and beyond the pale by replacing common dice and cards with gems, which were cut and designed to allow the precious stones themselves to become game pieces.

Many such games could, and were, played with such stones, but one especially common one, known as the Three Fates, was played with three gems of three hues - one ruby, one emerald and one sapphire - cut into the form of a pentagonal trapezohedron, with ten sides, each marked with a number or rune. The gems were tossed like dice, and functioned like dice, producing a range of up to a thousand combinations with each cast.

Three Fates was based on the principle of creating a sequence of numbers, valuing pairs, triples, and ordered sequences, with a hierarchy of results determining the winner of the toss. The hierarchy of scoring was as follows, and ties were either rerolled, or settled by larger numbers having precedence over lower:

(note that 0 =10, and is thus the highest possible roll of one gem, and the orders of the three numbers are of no consequence; the three numbers of each roll are arranged for best results. Consider this game essentially a hand of three-card stud poker )

THREE OF A KIND: 999, 333, 777, etc. (Note again that 000 is the highest scoring result possible.)

BEATS...

STRAIGHTS: 789, 123, 567, etc.

BEATS..

PAIRS: 223, 116, 929, 633, etc.

BEATS:

HIGH GEM: 190, 278, 460

Sample Roll offs:

a) 888 vs. b) 133: A wins - Three of a kind beats pair
a) 189 vs. b) 172: A wins - High Gem of 9 beats 7
a) 456 vs. b) 331: A wins - Straight beats a pair.
a) 870 vs: b) 112: B wins - pair beats High Gem
a) 113 vs. b) 119: B wins - Pairs tie, but High Gem 9 beats 3
a) 123 vs. b) 789: B wins - Higher-value straight
a) 333 vs. b) 555: B wins - Higher value Three of a kind
a) 000 vs. b) 183: A wins - Three of a kind beats High Gem 8
a) 901 vs. b) 910: Roll is Tied - same three numbers must roll off
a) 752 vs. b) 275: Roll is Tied - same three numbers must roll off.
a) 822 vs. b) 012: A wins - 0 counts as a Ten, so B is not a Straight; Pair wins.
a) 818 vs. b) 707: A wins - Pair of 8s beats pair of 7s.
a) 292 vs. b) 448: B wins - pair of 4s beats pair of 2s

(Input, thoughts, modifications, and alterations are welcomed. Fancy talk aside, this is, again, just three-card stud poker, with d10s)

i'll be honest, poker was never my strong suit so this is a bit confusing for me....though if i had an in game explanation with option to do the dice rolls; i'd prolly have an easier time getting it figured out. o3o either way seems like fun and something i could see clio getting into ic Big Grin

too sexy to keep unhidden Wink

This is really clever!

If this got popular enough, I'd Rp a lonely roaming gambler.

Think western cowboy movie meets FFXIV.

Not a bad idea, I like it. Sound like a fun little game to use for some OCC/IC fun.

This is great. The world of Eorzea needs more hobbies: games, sports, etc. etc.

I find it very odd in a world like this that one cannot rp as an athlete because... well.... where are the sports? I suppose the closest we have is chocobo racing. The Gold Saucer should be a huge lore boon towards answering 'what does your character do for fun?' And it'd be neat to see more ideas like this take off, that help flesh out the entertainment industry of Eorzea.

<BUMP>

"Three Fates" got a field test at a successful party for Soliloquy's members and new recruits. The game went well, with only a single rules hitch that was ironed out, and I consider it ready for further spreading around Eorzea.

We had a BIG match, as you can see in the screenie below, so the number of players was not an issue.

I plan to promote it in some upcoming event ideas.
