FF13-2 did a better job with this and was pretty enjoyable, but still suffered from a bad overall plot.
Oddly enough, one of the most annoying things for me in FF13-2 was... the DLC. I got Gilgamesh and Ultros, more or less expecting to be able to use them as my allies from the onset or within a reasonable time-frame. Instead, I find out that not only do you have to fight them to get them - which requires specific combinations of monsters used in a certain order (especially in the case of Greg) - even if you manage to pull it off, you only have a CHANCE of getting the crystal that lets you summon them. If anything at all.
All that work to get a chance at the privilege to get to use the DLC monsters you paid for in... the last battle? Mowing over enemies you already horrendously out-leveled in the process of trying of getting them? It just struck me as very poorly implemented.
I can only hope any additional content in the FF7 remake - including DLC if any - is a bit better handled than that nonsense.
I hear you. The only DLC I bought was the Sazh stuff, because he was my favorite character in the original game. I wasn't prepared for the fact that it was really just a casino grind.
