Was hoping for advice, suggestions or recommendations on this.

A large part of my character's backstory involves the calamity and it's the main reason why she travels so much, looking for her family. I'd like to have her former home set on or near carteneu but I am a bit lore blind at the moment. Would there have been civilization so close to the area before the calamity? Does anyone have any better suggestions where to set her origins from? For ic reasons I cannot do any of the major cities.

The Carteneau Flats, and most of the Mor Dhona region for that matter, has been abandoned and mostly uninhabitable since the Battle of Silvertear Skies in the Year 1562, 15 years ago. Any who may have resided in the remote forest region before that time would've been small settlements or nomadic. No great cities have existed there for many hundreds of years as far as we know.

The closest permanent settlements to the Carteneau Flats during the pre-Calamity time period would've been Revenant's Toll (not the city there now but the camp you can see just outside the city to the west), Camp Brittlebark (which was destroyed in the Calamity), and any number of settlements in Thanalan, which were closest to the area. Vesper or the Silver Bazaar would work for this purpose.
