OK, now that my arm is better, I can repost (and rework) the idea!
I know several LSes like this type already exist, and I know they tend to be popular and fill up fast, so you may have a hard time getting into one (or they may have incompatible timezones). One more can't hurt!
The IC premise:
The Wings is the name of an association that sponsors individuals all over Eorzea. They can be artists, adventurers, crafters, gatherers, or have any other number of talents. All it takes is being an affiliate.
Ways in which they can sponsor you (or someone on your behalf):
- Pay for travel expenses/provide mounts
- Arrange for permission to enter normally restricted areas
- Pay for provisions and housing
- Scholarships
- Supply you with quality equipment (weapons, armor, research apparel, etc)
- Any number of things that take money
In return, you are given jobs to perform regularly. The more they sponsor you, the more work you do. Jobs usually have additional pay attached which is not considered part of the sponsorship.
Jobs generally depend on the skills you said you had when you affiliated. They could be pretty much anything, similar to the in-game quests and leves. They do not do assassinations or any type of illegal job. As far as anyone's concerned, they are a squeaky clean organization.
Buuut since nothing is perfect, and this is unknown even to most Wings staff, a certain organization pulls a few strings every once in a while. They specialize in information trading, rumor mongering, and generally anything that will push a (wealthy) client's agenda. So while to you a job of "locate item Y" may seem harmless, it may actually have a hidden purpose - it can be good, like item Y turning out to be important and earn you the gratitude of someone important, or bad, like luring you into a trap.
scrapped for now!
OOCly, of course, there will not be any hidden purpose unless you want there to be one.
The idea is to both give characters a reason to bond - e.g. by doing joint jobs, or just meeting via Wings - and an IC excuse to pull a plot device. The organization can, for instance, know a deep dark secret of yours, if you want. And they can give fate a friendly push for others to find out, too. It's up to you how to use that.
You can also decide on a job you want to be sent to you, for instance. Say you have a crafter and you want an excuse to interact with someone who has gathering skills - the job could be to make quality items out of a certain material, and be sent to the two characters so they can cooperate.
Actually turning in items or killing stuff wouldn't be necessary. All that's necessary is to pretend your character did it! But of course, the idea is to use jobs as an excuse to RP, so if you RP them, even better.
A FC may be made (not mandatory) just so people without one can get FC bonuses and such.
The LS would be OOC, for chatting and setting up RP.
If people like, there can be regularly scheduled events. Like an IC dungeon run night, where the job to run a dungeon is sent to everyone (who wants to participate). Or there may be an optional job advertised to the entire network for anyone who wants to show up. That sort of thing.
--------------
That's about it for the idea. Nothing too groundbreaking, but hey!
The idea came up because myself (for my alt Elissa Vermont) and Oroban (for Khyros Oroban) wanted an excuse to get more people involved in a little storyline we're developing. Our characters got robbed and will affiliate so they can continue what they were doing - and a LS like this would give us a perfect IC excuse to get more folks to hear about what it is that they were doing.
Getting involved in our little story isn't required! You'd be more than welcome to incorporate it into your own story, if you wanted.
So welp! Checking to see if anyone would be interested. If we do have interest, we'll set up a schedule for starting IC activity.
Note: We wouldn't have timezone restrictions or anything, but Oroban and I are (very) nocturnal. I usually hop on around 9 PM eastern and can stay on up until 5 AM some days. Oroban is usually on later and stays awake until roughly the same time. So people who mostly play outside of those times might not see much of us around. Sorry. ):
Please let me know if you'd be interested! I wanted to ask before making a LS Hall entry and such. There are also finer details to work out that input would be stellar for. Thank you!
