Personality/Behavior

Galen is a fairly quiet and introspective fellow, usually pausing to form thoughts before speaking. He has no fear of silence, and often a stare into his icy eyes accomplishes more than any flowery rhetoric would on his behalf. Though he is usually very measured, he is a bit of a wild card when upset; sometimes, he will proceed in the same thoughtful manner most know him to possess. Other times, he will act spontaneously and erratically. However, regardless of the action, he usually defaults to that which is most honorable or noble in the situation. Even when a refugee to Ul'dah, he did not believe in theft as a means to an end, preferring to scrape by through odd jobs and hunting when the opportunity presented itself. Galen will always stick up for those weaker than himself, and this has caused trouble for him on more than one occasion. He is also skeptical of governments, even those of the three grand companies, as he thinks it pompous to presume to speak for thousands of citizens, though he recognizes government as a means to an end (even despite Ul'dahs inabilities to provide for refugees).

Combat

Galen is handy with short blades and has only recently added an offhand shield to his repertoire; until the last several years, he only held a one-handed weapon. He is honorable but fierce in combat. Galen will never attack an unarmed or unaware opponent, even when moving in stealth, much to the chagrin of his adventuring parties. Galen is mostly self-trained; his improvisation and unpredictability thwarts much more skilled foes, though his unorthodox style is reckless for one who seeks to defend others. His recent adventures have sharpened his skills and forced him to begin seeking training from others, though his personality and wandering nature have prevented him from forming many long-lasting, trusting relationships with very skilled warriors. However, his behemoth stature and aggressive nature often freeze opponents in their tracks and can give the appearance of a very fearsome, skilled brute, and only the most disciplined or skilled opponents can detect weakness through the glamour.

Despite his growing expertise with a one-handed weapon and shield, Galen has long admired the Dragoons of Ishgard, and the presence of legions of lancers in the land has fueled his desire to pick up spears and seek formal training in other larger weapons when the time seems right.

In addition, after witnessing other great feats on various battlefields, Galen has picked up an interest in black magic, thinking it may further his strength as a means to an end.

Skills

In both his time on the streets of Pearl Lane and in camps in and outside Little Ala Mhigo, Galen became an excellent survivalist, able to make meals out of the simplest of ingredients as well as forge simple items of all kinds to sell. He became one of the better fishermen in the area, and went on longer fishing excursions with other adventurers to supply the refugees. As a youth, Galen had hoped to become a renowned craftsman as a tribute to his parents, foraging weapons and armor with no equal; however, status and access prevented it. As the years went on, though, Galen had opportunities to collaborate with other Ala Mhigan refugees, and learned a bit about the various crafting trades. In the present time, Galen can be found fishing for both fun and practicality as well as practicing carpentry.

History/Timeline

WIP

  • 1544: Galen born to Thraden Gyur and Eva (Scarletblade) Gyur.
  • 1557: Thraden helps Galen escape from Ala Mhigo during Garlean invasion/occupation; Thraden is captured and beheaded. Eva remains in Ala Mhigo, whereabouts unconfirmed.
  • 1558: Arrived in Ul'dah with numerous other Ala Mhigan refugees; performed odd jobs for merchants in order to earn meager supplies. Attempted to become apprentice to various tradeskills, but failed both due to competition and incompetency with crafts.
  • 1560: Scuffled with two members of the Brass Blades over a perceived injustice. Galen thought the Brass Blades were abusing two young girls and immediately sprung into action. He quickly disarmed one of them and dispatched him. The other took notice, and after a two-minute-long blow-for-blow battle that left Galen scarred and the Brass Blade bruised and winded, a Brass Blade Captain broke up the fight. All were taken in for questioning; the Brass Blades were attempting to question the young girls about a theft, a theft proven as the girls were also brought into custody. Galen was reprimanded, but released from further punishment as witnesses also noted his actions as honorable and the Blades found out he was only still a youth despite already standing 6'5".
  • 1561: Galen leaves the city, perceiving the Brass Blades' constant gaze at him as unnecessary and insulting surveillance. He comes upon Little Ala Mhigo and immediately befriends the locals.
  • 1562: Galen is scarred again when defending Little Ala Mhigo from bandits in the night; begins having memory 'skips', blackouts in his recollection. Is able to practice tradeskills with limited supplies in Little Ala Mhigo and becomes an important contributing member of the community.
  • 1564: When roaming Thanalan for supplies, Galen's party of 6 is attacked by a large group of bandits. Two are killed immediately, two are captured, and only Galen and one other survive. The captives are still MIA.
  • 1566: When it is discovered that many of the criminals now calling Thanalan home were former followers of The King of Ruin, Galen dedicates himself to martial training, wishing only to defend his new homeland and purge any remnants of that foul monarch's rein.
  • 1577: present day. There are many gaps in Galen's memory over the last decade.
