Went back over the quest dialogue and I guess it was just how I was interpreting Laniaitte saying how the knights were tired and suddenly when you give the knights the catsfoot chew they're ready to go through the drudgery of sentinel duty with renewed vigor. But the text is pretty vague and could easily just be that they were hungry - though I'm not quite sure how filling one small chew (I saw Eorzean Eats compare them to kusa mochi) would be? I didn't see anything about mochi or wagashi that hinted at it being reinvigorating until I read that kusa mochi can be made with mugwort, which apparently in the middle ages was believed to cure fatigue and ward off evil, so. Dunno! I'll remove it from the list though! ^^
Just went through the text myself to make sure as well! There are maaaaany types of wagashi and mochi, and like you said, some are made with mugwort or cudweed. I just assumed the catsfoot chew was a sweet comfort to the knights stationed out in the cold. Just like being brought a donut might lift your spirits.
