I eventually grew out of that and started to appreciate the idea of female characters getting to do cool stuff, so now I've essentially flipped around since I play women exclusively.I also started with playing male characters because back in the 90s online gaming was very much a sausage fest. There was a certain "girls don't know how to play" mentality that meant if you played a female character, you could pretty much count on no one taking you along for endgame content unless you wanted to be someone's gf.
I've never actually thought about it much before now.
At any rate, as far as I'm concerned, I'm not going to disapprove of anyone playing what they'd prefer/are comfortable with. Gaming is supposed to be fun, after all.
I played a rugged male ranger for years. No one ever thought I was a girl.
P.S. My character here is a half midlander, half highlander. It was a decision based entirely off my love for highlander lore and still needing a reason for her to grow up accepted by Gridanian society- her mom was a midlander conjurer.
