People being unrealistically open and giving out way TMI to me when we're still not even friends. I try to treat my RP conversations as I would IRL, and certain topics I don't touch with people I have just met and that I don't consider even a friend yet. I'd like to see some more formal behavior around, or hell, even distrust. There is an awful lack of distrusting people. But then again, there kicks in the "Being extrovert is the only way to find RP!" argument. *shrug*

What else, hmmm.....

Oh yeah, out-of-place equipment. Swimsuits in Coerthas, weddings dresses in... well... not-weddings. And worst of all, wedding dresses when attending someone else's wedding. It's rude to look as pretty/prettier than the spouse, peeps!

(EDIT: Also, non-virgin spouses marrying in a white dress. An american friend told me it's not too uncommon there, but here in Italy it's considered of Very Bad taste, as the white dress is the symbol of purity and chastity. A VIP recently married in white even though she already had two kids, the news went on complaining about it for a month. But this can be considered nitpicky on my part.)

Yeah this is 100% not a thing here (USA) with the wedding dresses.

Everyone marries in white, even if it's their 5th wedding. I've never heard of anyone suggesting otherwise. Also, how would you know if the bride is a virgin?

That thing about TMI? Yeah, people tend to let me know about their genitalia career without even me asking... or if they don't, their friends do. I can't tell other RPers what to not share, unfortunately x_x
Leaving out the obvious taboos (metagaming, godmodding, Mary Sues, etc.), other expected things like incomprehensible spelling and frequent typos, and general rudeness or thoughtlessness... my biggest RP pet peeve is with purple prose and walls of text. I don't like people who think the merit of their RP is based on how long their posts are. Being concise is one of the most basic rules of writing; trying to be fancy and do otherwise isn't good writing, it's the very antithesis of it.

I don't like when people add pointless fluff to their posts to try to make them longer. I don't like people who use figurative language in ways that don't make sense (Example: I recently ran into someone who used the phrase, "The sadism roamed vivid that night." What??? What does that even mean?). I don't like when people go out of their way to use large and/or obscure words that are used incorrectly or that in context are not as effective or sensible as smaller and more common synonyms. Stop. Just stop. You're not showing off your 1337 English skills; you're making a fool of yourself.

I'd have to say my next pet peeve is not with anyone's writing as all, but a common pet peeve people have with the writing of others that's not surprisingly been mentioned here: inner dialogue. Now I understand people who go overboard and I am as irked by it as anyone else. No, I don't need to know your character's secret thoughts on everything that happens in the RP, I don't need to know what your character had for breakfast, I don't need you to narrate your character's life story to me in the middle of an RP post.

BUT I do see people cry "omg inner dialogue is so annoying my character isn't a mind-reader!!!" the moment insight is given into a single thought from another character. Chill out, no one expects your character to be a mind-reader--quite contrarily, they just expect you to have the sense and decency not to metagame that information. The goal of role-play should be to entertain the reader/writer on the other side of the screen, not relay exactly what his/her character should know and nothing more.

Someone relaying his/her character's inner thoughts or other things your character may not be able to perceive is usually done just to give you, the role-player, some insight into who that character is and the bigger picture of the role-play. It's great not for just entertainment and to sate your OOC curiosity, but for plotting out ideas for the role-play. Not to mention, it can still be useful IC. Knowing what's going through a character's head can give you some idea what type of facial expression, body language, or voice they may be using, and just help you know what sort of "vibes" your character may be picking up on.

The tradition of only virgins wearing white on their wedding day is very antiquated, and almost all brides wear white on their wedding in the US, virgin or not. Not only is it a cultural thing for us 'Muricans, but a good chunk of people here probably are not even aware of the traditional reason for the white dress, and those who are often find the entire line of thinking behind it to be old-fashioned and misogynistic. I think there's plenty good reason for people to choose not to follow the "only virgins in white" rule in their role-play.
I actually don't have that many, aside from the usual fair (Godmoding, Metagaming, Not sticking to lore, etc etc)

~ I don't mind if someone wants to write this like a novel and state their entire mental state and thoughts and feelings in a post. It's easy enough to ignore from my characters point of view and as a player I don't mind reading it. It bugs the hell out of me when they do that and the only thing the character then says is "Yeah." How the hell am I supposed to respond to that? You just wrote a huge paragraph about the inner workings of your character and all you wrote for my character was "yeah." Not. Helpful.

~ When it is obvious, so so obvious, you are only roleplaying to be in a romance. Look, we all like Romance - My character is even in one. But if your walking into a group of characters and scoping out which one your character can fall in love with, it's almost insulting. Some people go so far as not even wanting to RP with you if your character is taken or not of the gender they prefer. You don't care about my character, you only care about their sexual orientation/relationship status. And I'm not talking about people who leave their characters open for romance later down the road. I'm talking the people who immediately crush on your character first meeting, make proclamations about love in a week, flirt with a bunch of people just to see which one sticks (Not flirty characters, different thing). You all know the type I'm talking about. It's frustrating, because friendships and familial ties can be just as important and some people take "I want to see where it goes in the story." as an insult. Please don't treat my character as a potential love interest, treat her as a person.

That's it.

They didn't happen to be RPing Adam Jensen, did they?

Wow, no reason to call me that just because in my country this is still a Big Deal. Different cultures, you know? I admitted to be nitpicking in the first place, since I am aware in the US it's a disregarded rule.

But fine, I'll be mysoginistic if that suits you.

Perhaps reread her statement... there is nothing directed at you. No need to read offence where none is offered.

It's alright, I covered those. ;P

But if we're gonna be smallfolk here, I have a few to add:

- People who write "u" instead of "you" when RP'ing. And all the similar lolspeak (as I like to call it). However, I am not including people who have English as a second language or those with dyslexia, because they have legit reasons to not be good at spelling.

- People who go AFK mid-RP without giving a quick note about it. I can understand if something happened so you had to leave immediately, but if it's not something immediate, at least send a /tell and let me in the know, so I'm not waiting forever on you responding, maybe even thinking the chat had munched my post (which I assume every time someone doesn't reply or is just really slow in replying).

- People who send multiple minor responses right after eachother, not giving me a chance to respond first. It's kinda like the real-life equivelant to someone who keeps interrupting you, not letting you answer first before moving on to the next topic. It's different if you are making a looooong explanation with lots of emotes etc., and can't fill it all into one post, but then make a small indication that you are continuing your post so I know I should wait before replying. ^^
Role-players who suddenly stop interacting with anyone other than their character's partner once their character enters a relationship. I can understand wanting some private time now and then but when it happens every single day and screws over those waiting around to continue their own character's story...it becomes pretty horrible.

Haha, I hate it when couple do that IRL as well. XD

-When people make a big deal out of RP pet peeves to the point where the roleplayer sounds like a stick in the mud. They then have trouble accepting RP or having fun in RP because they can't look past their pet peeves. Or they stop RPing with someone over a pet peeve that really isn't and shouldn't be a big deal.
TL;DR RP induced meta negativity

-My RP pet peeve is 'RP pet peeves'

Not my intent to be a "Negative Nancy" just getting a feel for what people do and don't like while listing a few of my own.
I don't blacklist a person from my rp circle for doing those things nor do I chastise them for it, but I can't promise I won't be rolling my eyes from behind my computer screen. Smile

Usually, RP pet peeve threads end poorly. Regardless of your intentions, it is a negative premise. Listing these out commonly rile up some manner of paranoia, making it harder for folks who are already scared, to approach in RP.

What does listing out pet peeves accomplish? It's not really a discussion thread. It is also, to be honest, hard to not get the impression that people care a great deal about the pet peeves they list.

It smells of "if you do my RP pet peeve, you're not a good RPer or a good writer."

But I get the feeling I am starting something with this. If you're posting just remember the following:

A: no RPer is perfect
B: you probably do something that somebody else considers a pet peeve
C: those who invoke a pet peeve on your list probably have lots of other great positives about their RP style
D: relax sometimes; it's good for you

Lastly, I don't consider things like meta-gaming, God moding, power gaming, ic/ooc crossing as pet peeves, personally. I would consider those common courtesy.

This.

Not sure what else threads like these really accomplish except making folks hyper-aware that something they do in RP irks someone else. There are TONS of things I dislike in RP that other folks do - but I also know that those folks can have tons of fun doing things that I don't like. If I don't enjoy something - I just ignore it. If I dislike it so much I can't RP with that person, I just politely refrain from RPing with them. Simple as that. Don't really see the use in airing it out to the world.

...unless of course they're things like 90ks or FFXIV eating long detailed posts. :V Those are legitimately annoying as all hell.
My rp pet peeve is when I get rp despite having afked only to return and find the person left.

I feel like I gave them the middle finger ;_;
To Tiergan its a good way for new people to maybe get some ideas of behaviours that might be pushing people away.

Also everyone loves to vent.
