Where does this even go!? I don't even know!? OOC or RP!? I don't care!

MISTELL STORIES!

GOOOOOOOO!!!!!

*this inspiration of a thread brought to you by the good people of The Grindstone LS. NO REGRETS*
I've had two incredibly embarrassing mistells so far in my MMO career, though both of them happened in WoW rather than FFXIV:

- The first happened a few days after Rebecca Black's infamous 'Friday' video began to circulate throughout the internet. I found it hilarious and linked it it a friend in-game, only to accidentally post it in /say during a session of serious RP instead.

- The second was much more embarrassing and I've yet to live it down. Back before I moved in with my partner we used to spend a lot of time playing WoW and often talked in party chat for the sake of convenience. We're both very sexually charged and so it wasn't unusual for our conversations to get a bit steamy. I made it clear that I was looking forward to meeting up with him again and promised to show him how much I missed him by 'pounding him senseless' to put it in politer terms.

...naturally as my luck would have it I ended up saying it in guild chat by mistake and hastily logged off in embarrassment. My friends found it hilarious, though - and it turned out that a fair few of the other couples in the guild had had similar experiences in the past.
I've luckily avoided any mortifying mistells (narrowly, in some instances... very, very narrowly). Most of mine are tame, but there was one that really made me grimace.

In a past MMO, there was a girl who hated me because of some entirely high school-esque drama. She liked a guy who had previously liked me, and then he had become really petty when I didn't reciprocate his feelings. Because I had once held his attention and because he had surely talked up how mean and terrible I was for "friendzoning" him, she doubly hated my guts. She kept saying very passive-aggressive things about me, so I tried to steer clear of her as much as possible. One day, my guildie pointed out that her alt looked a lot like my character.

The game had an "inspect" feature that let you zoom up on another character's face, so I used it, not realizing that the game automatically sent the next whisper you wrote to whoever you had inspected. I went to respond to a friend joking that I should visit him in Florida and sent a message saying something like, "Why would I want to visit a place full of swamps and old people?" It wasn't anything incriminating, but sending a random message to someone I entirely wanted to avoid made me cringe. =|
I've been on the receiving end of someones naughty session and got a very...detailed.../tell once.  In the middle of a Dynamis run, that was entertaining.

I've always been very careful about mistells, if I've ever had any I've quickly erased them from memory.  But recent on XIV I did one in the middle of the Ul'dah market area that, taken seriously and out of context, may have labeled me as a potential racist.  AND I'M NOT!  It's bad enough I don't feel like explaining it here, but the mortification made me run off and hide.  I just hope the RMT spam and half awake people didn't notice!  And if any of you saw that pretend you didn't?
One of my guildmates (who will remain nameless because if she/he ever found out I'd surely be lynched rofl) accidentally posted in guild how much they enjoyed how sexy their RP Partner could be (that is my totally tame way of describing the scenario).
They played it off fairly well and me and the guild do like to poke fun at the two of them now from time to time because it still happens.  After that particular situation though I Immediately wrote:

/Impersonates (so and so's character):  *Lay's (so and so) down on their bed and runs a hand through their hair.  "Just lay down, and let me handle it from here"

LOLOLOLOL

I think I've had maybe one or two awkward mistells when I was with my girlfriend at the time, talking to another guildie ><

Oh and just recently I was quoting Gandalf and Frodo's conversation about how Fordo "Wished the ring had never came to him" while RPing. *edit* I was telling the quote to a friend in Skype and accidentially wrote it in X-fire.

So all of the sudden I'm in the middle of an intense lecture about what the group needs to do and I throw that out of no where ><
I'm always sending messages at the wrong chats, but other than the embarrassment of failing so much, I don't remember having said anything terrible. It's mainly because the things I chat about in-game aren't special, so it doesn't really matter who reads them.

Considering I already panic at any random inoffensive mistell I accidentally do, reading the other horror stories posted in this thread is making me nervous ^^;
Just imagining myself in any similar situation makes me want to hide under several rocks, haha.
I think the most embarrassing mt I've done in FFXIV was one where the Night Blades and the Grim Echo were OOCing in the IC LS we have, trying to come up with a name for the celebration people have when others hit 50. "Ding party" became "Dong Party" and I MTed into Intermission "Yes, let's have a dong party."

WHOOPS.
As far as FF14 has been so far, so good.

I've made it a point to say many times that I don't swear in polite company. However, I tend not to consider Linkshell chat at 4am polite company. Between LS comments though, I'd stopped to ask a question in the /shout channel. I'd then apparently forgotten this and resumed crafting. At some point someone started spamming the /shout channel with something stupid... Some trolling copypasta nicked from WoW or something to that effect. I was gonna casually complain about it in LS, and apparently forgot to switch it back and called them out in /shout.... woops!
When commenting on a friend who turned weapon display off, putting away his weapon:

"... He totally just put it in his ass."

Right over the LS. I almost died. Oops!
Heh, well, Rinh's IC partner changed his appearance because more than a few people had thought they were siblings at first glance. Once he changed, I had a look and said, "Yay, they don't look incestuous anymore!"...into Europa instead of party chat, right after a new person had joined. >.>
Oh by Bryegot this is an entertaining thread,

I've had a few, in various settings, perhaps most commonly was WoW because as many may or may not know, you needed to be in a Raid group to enter certain instances, and I always loved meandering around Karazhan. A guildie (lets call him J-kun) often indulged me by letting me sit in group with him while he crafted and auction housed to his hearts content. I would invite others from time to time but often he'd remain ignoring our shenanigans (which were minimal since you could just use /say once they showed up inside the area.) But lo' and behold, some days I seem not to be blessed with that level of competence.

Quarimar in raid: "Oh. we're already inside, just let us know when you show up."

Friend 1 in raid: "alright, i'll be there shortly, just landing in the swamp right now"

Friend 2 (in the dungeon with me) in raid chat: "Take your time, its not like Nightmare has a despawn timer. Speaking of which, who's the 4th wheel? friend of yours?"

J-kun in raid: "Yeah, I just help him with his time sinks."

Friend 1 in local chat: "Oh ho? I bet he also helps you 'lay some pipe' a nice big strong Orc is exactly what you need."

Quarimar in raid: "HARDLY. I might want to jump his proverbial bones, and I'll admit I like the shade of green, but do you have any idea how hard it is to find an Orc who speaks clearly? I prefer better conversation not just grunting and shouts."

Needles to say I was mortified, particularly because he asked for context and the rest of the party had obliged, evidently he didn't know I swung that way. I was vindicated how ever, when 1&2 proceeded to lose the roll for Nightmare SO HA.

In the context of FFXIV, I was having a discussion on dyes over /tell, deciding and debating what clashed with what, when I accidentally put in in /say. We just continued on with it through /say, but I face-palmed pretty hard when a stranger decided to start commenting as well. Besides, bright Yellow on robes for a Thaumaturge? I'm not looking for subtlety, but I think it hardly fitting.
Thanks to ARR's rather unweildy chat system, I've spent more time sending mistells in this game than actually chatting!

... Okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration. But only slight! Luckily I don't erp or whatever, so there's not been anything mortifyingly embarrassing - it's just frustrating and amusing. xD
If there were such a thing as frequent flyer miles for mistells, I would probably have earned enough to last me a lifetime. Seriously. I'd probably be one of the worst offenders except that none of mine have been of particular note, except perhaps, for dualbox RP when I would use the wrong character for the wrong action and then completely not realize that I did so.

I /have/ said things in party chat about said PUG parties. Luckily, nothing insulting -yet-! But I still felt pretty mortified because it could have been bad.

But yeah... my mts have gotten astronomically worse since ARR (*curses terrible chat interface*). And surely there will be more in the future!
Val Nunh still mocks me about an accidental MT I made into LS chat in the Grindstone. I MT all the time. Whenever I do it, I blame Khyros for my curse-- but in essence, I spread my curse to all our other people and we end up posting RP into the LS. =3=

My particularly awkward one wasn't -that- awkward (was not ERP), but it was super sappy sweet and intimate with face-holding and such that I'd never want anyone to know my crazy-butch Roegadame was capable of with her partner.

Because of the chat system, I try to stay in ls chat and just /s or /em my emotes. But because of the chat minimum I'll lose posts. So the other person's like "Oh, I think I missed one here" and I go about trying to repost them so fast--.... yeah.

So embarrassed I couldn't even scroll back up to see which part I MT'd.

Val made it worse.

A hundred times worse.
Heh, I suspect a fair few people on this site have been cursed by this thread! I was doing a lengthy session of F.A.T.E grinding earlier and managed to get a grand total of five fresh levels as a dragoon. About halfway through this I happened to stumble across a handful of RPers that I recognised from this site and decided to send them a friendly greeting in passing as acknowledgement.

They didn't respond at first, so I thought little of it - only for one of them to suddenly blurt out 'Ugh, Theodric? I hope he doesn't try and RP with us, he sounds like a dick on the RPC.'

Once they'd realised that they'd made the statement in /say rather than /party or whatever other chat they were using to communicate with each other they swiftly darted off without so much as another word.

Ironically enough, the RPers in question are in a guild that describes themselves as tolerant and accepting! Still, I didn't let it drag me down and found it to be pretty amusing. It's great to see that RPers are upholding their reputation of being mature and friendly...
