There's no list, because most things are not hard and fast rules. They depend on your ability to pull them off. And from my experience, most people can't pull off a mental disorder they don't know really well. Especially schizophrenia and multiple personality syndrome.

I'll RP with you.Â
I'm saying that now because I would not want my first experience to be general unwelcome, even if I'm doing something that I think is fun that is generally frowned upon. I gave you a couple pointers as to how to not make ripples in the point with it. I want you to feel welcome, I want you to try, and see for yourself if it works, or if it doesn't work -- if you enjoy it, or if you don't, or if you can pull it off or if you can't. I want you to see as well, that even through keeping something like that secret it CAN make a difference for you, because you get to experience your character's internal struggles and learn/develop more about her through them. I want you to have fun, I want you to grow. I'd like to think that's what this place is about. Edit: If we're being trolled, I'm good with taking the bait. You know, juuust in case. |

Please post I am actually curious. <magicAdminHat> I figured I'd chime in here to point out that the RPC doesn't define what constitutes RP in XIV. In fact, the membership of the forum is at best a significant minority of the total RP community on Balmung -- so there's not really a community consensus (run a search for White Mage some time to see how polarizing that is; despite some of the statements here, that is in no way settled lore ). Even if there were, it'd be presumptuous of the site to post up a list of "this is acceptable" and "this is not." We're a resource for RPers, not a site with a prescriptive position on what constitutes acceptable RP. </magicAdminHat> With that in mind and the magic admin hat off, though, as others have pointed out, most RPers in MMOs tend not to like it when what is asserted to be a true about a character OOC doesn't appear to be possible in lore. The further afield the character goes, the less accepted it is. If a character clashes directly with extant lore too (Odin is a very specific entity in Final Fantasy, particularly in XIV), that's a huge turn-off. RP, being a collaborative activity, is rooted in meshing your story with others'. A character that's far away from the lore is very difficult to mesh, so it reduces your opportunities for RP. Allow me to propose a challenge. If your backstory will never come up in character (as a way of avoiding the issues above), what benefit is it to have in the character's storyline? An element of a character that never gets discussed, never gets mentioned, and is known only to that character doesn't add anything to the RP, but it certainly can provoke negative responses OOC. If it's not adding anything to the character that others will see and there are lore-friendly alternatives, why keep it? You could, for instance, easily go the "Terra" route of your character waking up in an unfamiliar land, with vague memories of battles and warfare, but no memory of who she is, where she came from, or where she is now. That lets you fill in the backstory later as you see fit in a lore-compliant way (dimension hopping, at least from other FF games, is canon in XIV if you decide you still want to go that route) while offering a hook for RP in the present and not including elements that, as you can see, tend to produce a rather negative response OOCly. Quality RP at low, low prices! ((about me | about L'yhta Mahre | L'yhta's desk | about Mysterium, the Ivory Tower: a heavy RP society of mages)) |

There's no rules that people follow, it's just personal tastes.
A lot of people here, from what I've seen, like to stick to lore. Some like to stick to it as much as possible yet bend it around for enjoyment factor, others stick to it like chewing gum under your classroom table. They don't budge nor bend and that shit is hard to get off too. Some just don't even regard the lore at all and throw in their blonde haired Kirito from an alternate dimension of SAO that sounds like Cloud Strife and is totally just and brooding in the world of Eorzea. It's less of "FELLO DEES RULZ OR U DON GET ARPEES" and more of just finding the people that are accepting of your character and it's uniqueness or people that don't mind roleplaying with you. As I said before, sometimes you don't tell people your backstory and just move on. A lot of roleplay that I've had tends to look at what's going on now rather than what's happened in the past. There's been quite a few times where I forget I have a character backstory because I don't mention it that often. It's really a guideline. |

How is ERP even remotely related to advice on background stories? No seriously, where did ERP come from? That's it. My brain just gave up. I really need to run away from serious threads like this, like Flynt senpai suggested. Flynt senpai! FLYNT SENPAI!! HALP! *runs off to compliments thread and hides* |
