(03-20-2015, 02:34 PM)Caspar Wrote: Huh? You can't play someone who suffers from some undefined kind of mental illness anymore because if you haven't experienced it, you can't rp it? That sounds unfairly restrictive. If film and tv can get it wrong, we can, and if we want to be better about it then them, we can always do our research. I don't understand.

Anyway, I came from forum rp as well.  Not being able to dictate the pace and nature of the rp I get is a bit jarring myself. I'm used to being the ringleader as far as the story writing goes, since that's usually what I did on the forums I played on. But now I have to say it's somewhat of a relief to not need to. I can be part of the crowd or merely silently observe if I wish. That's something hard to do in forum rp at times without a lot of terse, uninteresting posts, unless you're fine with volunteering a lot of internal monologue (like I was.).
I had a best friend growing up for nine years who had schizophrenia so my idea was based off my experiences and how much time I spent with that person. You can not truly know someone unless you are them though, but I had such a strong bond with her that it felt like we were one most of the time. It can take a huge toll on you though, not only for the one with the mental disability but the people who are close to them. Boundaries are really hard to be kept.

How many hours a week do you spend roleplaying? Just curious seems like you have spent a lot of time and love into it.

As someone who primarily came from Forum RP I can see where you have had a different conception of what the RP in an MMO is like. Unlike (what I think of) tabletop or forum roleplay, the worlds aren't built by us roleplayers or GMs in the same sense as some of us may think. In an MMO the world and story, the history and "rules" are already in place. Our characters in the MMO give the world the body and realism of a story. Characters with lives within the story.

That one sultansworn who was inspired by Papashan but ended up flat on his face. The amnesiac garlean experiment, tossed out and left in a hostile environment to himself and in turn hostile to certain others. The reckless mentor who ended up dying on a misguided mission to make sure her home wasn't being taken advantage of. The runaway from an affluent family hidden for years before backstabbing led to her new home thinking her a traitorous spy.

Characters can all have a great story that is built upon by the wonderful game we have chosen to try and RP in.
Working on little ideas I had with regards to the material everyone has given, will post them shortly.

Wow 8 pages.

So I started something similar, I choose to work with the lore as much as possible (, leaving my characters history a giant 'blank', beyond the Calamity, so that way it could be filled in with more lore appropriate stuff.

Here is the thread if you want to watch the development: Back Story Help.

Basically I started from a similar place. I wanted her to be fresh faced, but also not be so blank.

Keep trying, we're all hear to help. Sometimes you find that cutting of extraneous stuff is worth it. So far the RPC has been great about helping me find lore appropriate choices and alternatives.

If you're character is a Valkyrie, then perhaps you'd want to choose Roegadyn, they're very norse/Germanic in flavor itseems at least with the names and strongly maratine culture.

I'd say most of us spend a hours roleplay. I know just today, I ran about Ul'dah (the desert city) and had a great time with people, who were standing front of an NPC I needed to use so I jumped into RP, but accidentaly eavesdropping.. (big old miqo'te (catperson) ears.. her things)

Ideas
Tam-Tara based ideas:
  • Traveling Knowledge Broker gets an odd request for information by a young conjurer named Edda
  • Knowledge Broker feels something is off, she hears from the villagers that Edda is in Tam-Tara and heads there to check out the situation.
  • Shortly after she is greeted by Paiyo Reiyo and some adventurers leaving looking very shaken up.
  • The traveling Knowledge Broker is very baffled by the use of the little information she gave that had made Tam-Tara become what it is now
  • Traveling Knowledge Broker spends many hours investigating Tam-Tara
  • Despite having all the information she needs after weeks of coming back to Tam-Tara she keeps returning wanting to know more becoming obsessed with Edda's work

    Tam-Tara based ideas 2:

  • Traveling cook regulars are Edda, Liavinne, Avere, and Paiyo are always making her laugh they all seem to butt heads often but they share a common goal which I really admire.
  • Cooking for them becomes something very dear to me to see their daily antics.
  • Avere and Edda are dating but Avere is not very nice to Edda.
  • I confronted Edda telling her she deserved better and Edda just smiled at me with no response.
  • I thought nothing of it at the time.
  • I gave the group extra food and they went on their way to Tam-Tara.
  • Cooking for adventurers later on I heard about a mishap at Tam-Tara.
  • My heart quickly sunk and I rushed to the entrance of Tam-Tara.
  • There I saw Paiyo a mess  leaving with a group of adventurers.
  • I entered Tam-Tara without any skills of combat hoping I be able to find Edda she was always the calm one of the group.
  • Everything was dark.
  • Torches suddenly lit as I walked by I heard a loud twisted laugh seeing Edda pale and with a cynical smile.
  • I ran as fast as I could getting lost Tam-Tara spending my time running from Edda.
  • Spending more time there made me see what truly was of Edda and it made me want to leave even more.
  • I spent weeks running from her waiting for someone and having her twist my thoughts.
  •  I awaited for someone to come save me.
  • Months soon went by and time faded away.
  • I lived off of anything edible in my surroundings.
  • A group of adventurers found me one day helping me escape Edda.
  • My eyesight had change from being in the darkness for so long and my mind had also been broken.
    The Void Ideas:
    • A Conjurer gets a request to help assist a group of adventurers who are getting rid of a demon named Buso who has taken over a nearby Mineshaft.
    • Her duty is help assist the group while they defeat Buso.
    • The battle is successful but last second everything goes wrong.
    •  The Void is very unhappy and drags the Conjurer to the Void.
    • Conjurer becomes trapped in the void.
    • Being tortured as entertainment, stealing her aether when needed but letting her stay alive for their enjoyment.
    •  She awakes in Eorzea unsure of what happened but with a burning sensation in her head that will not go away.
    • She travels to the crowded streets of Ul'dah.
    • Orbs of light flow everywhere and twisted faceless demons dance around feasting.
    • The imprints in her mind and odd flash backs have seemed to effected her brain in a way that she is able to see the voidsent and who they are latched onto.
    • But also making herself in danger because of the voidsent knowing that she has this ability to see them.
      The Void Ideas 2:

    • An honest farmers daughter from Limsa who has two sisters
    • One sister is an archer
    • The other is a blacksmith
    • Unsure of what she wants she continues to live along side her father who hates his job, he wishing to one day be a rich merchant.
    • Both of her sisters went off to travel leaving her and her father alone
    • She loves her father but he complains a lot causing her to one day snap yelling at him
    • He takes her yelling at him very serious and forbids her from going outside
    • She thinks that he may be plotting something for him to get that wealth he wanted out of her
    • Shortly after her sister the archer returns maddened and sick she has been over exposed somehow to voidsent
    • He hires a conjurer to look into the archers health, she tells him that she has been over exposed and the only way to cure her is of voidsent blood
    • The father fetches his daughter and drags her up to an area that most people do not dare go to.
    • A voidsent appears and just stares at the father
    • "I beg of you, please give me your blood inreturn I will give you my youngest daughter."
    • The voidsent seems interested and offers some of his blood for the human.
    • The voidsent takes the hyur daughter back to the void where she spends many of her years.
    • Her mind is blank she can not handle anymore of the void.
    • Seeing her as a used doll the voidsent release her back to Limsa where the once world she loved so dearly she could no longer remember.

Lol, you must be pretty fond of Song of Saya, haha. I can see the influence there.

They're pretty detailed ideas. I wonder if people might think these are too specific in flavor or mood to play with regularly. Like, comedy doesn't come natural to characters with such a dark background. That could limit your options. In addition, you utilized MSQ missions in your character's background. Some people don't play with that in mind, so it could limit your options as well. However the basic principles don't seem completely out of line with the lore? I could be wrong. I am fond of really dark stuff like Saya or Phantom as well, but I wanted to make my character at least somewhat balanced so I had some freedom to rp many different things.

As for me, I rp'd for I dunno, four years? Then nothing for about 3 years, then this game.

Thank you for the link following the development Smile

Thank you for the suggestions, I will keep that into consideration. Maybe I will make my IC a different name than my ingame to suit my characters plot best. Plot is what is most important to me.

I loooooooooooooooooooooooooove Saya no Uta, it is one of my favorite Visual novels. In points of it leaves you wanting to stop playing and even disgusted but it is so well done that is able to give you those emotions so easily. I really enjoy things with abnormal plots.

Ah I see, I took a break for around two years. I use to be a giant weeb and made a piczo site for roleplaying of Inuyasha. That was what got me into roleplaying when I was thirteen. I am now in my twenties and enjoy a more mature plot with strong character development.

Any tips for someone just getting into this community?

Hmmmm. I am okay with having horror elements in my character, but you are right that they would not really be able to be diverse in different situations causing people to only be interested in roleplaying in certain situations. I kind of thought of the Broker being able to handle different situations. When I created the brainstorm of it the first thing that came to mind was the Happy Mask Salesman kind of. Maybe a short temper and really twisted but the temper can be used for comedy in some cases.

I think maybe be flexible and be willing to start out small and grow into something grander? I can't really consider myself established, but being in an FC that is willing to work with my stories helped me a lot. But I know a lot of players outside the fc and rp with them as well.

Unlike forum rp, where I usually cooperated with players to establish connections before rp, the world already is established, so developing a really complex background ahead of times could interfere with your ability to play with people, like I mentioned before. I like the idea of being connected to voidsent and struggling with trauma as a result. I think you could build off that, as long as you're aware what the people you are playing with like. A lot of people on here avoid touching anything involving the main story quest or sidestories, but still hold as close to the lore as they can. It's the approach of conceiving of a plausible person who could be born in this world and sort of just dropping them in where it makes the most sense.

Yeah, I'm pretty fond of utsuge like Saya. XD I liked Phantom by the same company a lot, and it pretty heavily influenced the kinds of characters I like to play in rp.

Play the game, ask lore questions? Ask about things. I know I find out stuff all the time, because this lore apparently is really deep. ( and I've only just started).

I know ask questions of people all the time across various media, here and in chat and tells, and linkshells, when I get curious.

Any suggestions for finding a small RP FC? Is generally where everyone roleplays at Quicksands? Are there any other popular roleplaying spots?

Hmmm. I get it but I do not at the same time kind of.

I will check it out I have not played Phantom yet. Not visual novel related but I really enjoy Ito Junji work too.

I must say, I have to give a shout out to the OP. There was some pretty stiff resistance going on there for awhile.

It's refreshing to see someone handle severe criticism and take it well enough.

Hats off to you good sir/madame!

Asked some players in Quicksand for tips a lot of them were not that lore heavy.

Is there someone on this forum that specializes in learning lore? Someone that has a lot of passion into it? I would be willing to do some art of their character in exchange for teaching from someone that enjoys it.

Sounsyy usually is. But um...depending on what you have to ask, it may have already been answered. I'd recommend trying a search on the forums, and if that doesn't yield an answer, posting a new thread with questions.

Yeah, I'd definitely track down Sounsyy. They're our resident lore monger. But yeah, do some searches, look at some wikis, and have fun!
