I agree and I could apply this to the opposite as well. That person who is the "3edgy5me" type that makes you want to hurl a Hawthorn Heights CD and Hot Topic Gift Card toward them and wish them the best of luck. But hey, it's hard out there in Eorzea.

My main pet peeve is people making emotes that include your character's reactions. Especially in combat. Something like...

"Buff Van Darkblade parries sending the sword flying from Evangeline's hand."

Unless we have pre agreed, don't tell me what happens to my sword. It's MY SWORD! RAWR.

I'm all for having my char be beat down, you just don't get to do it!

Don't have many, but these would be the major ones that I tend not to always share opinions on:
  • Dropping sensitive subject matter (i.e. rape, abuse, mutilation, torture, bigotry, etc.) without fair warning and consent.
  • Expecting my characters to always be happy and affectionate with open arms, especially during situations where that is exceedingly unlikely to happen.
  • Writing someone into a corner; always give your partner a decent way out. To not do so is incredibly unfair and counterproductive to cooperative storytelling.

You're anxious. It's so good, and perfectly showcases your character. It is an embodiment of his spirit in text form.

You want to be nice though, you don't want to hurry your partner if they're just taking a little longer than usual, so you wait, and you wait.

You RP partner whispers you after a while. "Did you post?"

You scream your lungs out cursing the FFXIV chat system. Once more it has arbitrarily decided to devour your post, perhaps believing it too gentle, too pure for this world.

You reluctantly set out to break your masterpiece up into smaller bits.

Oh, good lord, this so much. If I had a dollar for every time the chat system has eaten one of Chao's posts, I wouldn't have to work anymore. Fortunately, I have Chao's main RP partner on skype and so whenever silence passes for a while, one of us goes "It ate a post again, eh?"

Applying real life logic, issues and what not to this setting; if I wanted to roleplay irl, I ehm, would not roleplay and just go outside instead.

The only two I have would be:

-Having rp out in the open world but then ignoring everyone buy your little group. If you don't want someone possible joining in then please avoid using /say. Most people from what I have seen are nice enough to ask before jumping in.

- Others trying to shape my character growth and changes over time, to something they want to rp with more. Asmo is a more stoic and quite person for reasons, don't try to force him out of that and expect suddenly think he's fixed. It would just make him avoid your character for the time being until he has come into his own as a more open person. After all the changes have started for him, but no one would notice, so just let his change run there course.

One of my biggest pet peeves in roleplay is the usage of would.  Roleplay in game is present tense because the action is happening now, not later.  The argument I most often receive is that it's passively "asking permission" to perform an action, leaving room for your RP partner(s) to react.  You can do the same thing in present tense, though, you may have to be more descriptive in an effort to create visual or tonal cues for others to react to (like we do in real life.)

TL;DR RP induced meta negativity

-My RP pet peeve is 'RP pet peeves'

Not my intent to be a "Negative Nancy" just getting a feel for what people do and don't like while listing a few of my own.
I don't blacklist a person from my rp circle for doing those things nor do I chastise them for it, but I can't promise I won't be rolling my eyes from behind my computer screen. Smile

Usually, RP pet peeve threads end poorly. Regardless of your intentions, it is a negative premise. Listing these out commonly rile up some manner of paranoia, making it harder for folks who are already scared, to approach in RP.

What does listing out pet peeves accomplish? It's not really a discussion thread. It is also, to be honest, hard to not get the impression that people care a great deal about the pet peeves they list.

It smells of "if you do my RP pet peeve, you're not a good RPer or a good writer."

But I get the feeling I am starting something with this. If you're posting just remember the following:

A: no RPer is perfect
B: you probably do something that somebody else considers a pet peeve
C: those who invoke a pet peeve on your list probably have lots of other great positives about their RP style
D: relax sometimes; it's good for you

Lastly, I don't consider things like meta-gaming, God moding, power gaming, ic/ooc crossing as pet peeves, personally. I would consider those common courtesy.

1 People barging into an rp without any que or warning- EX: demanding the focus is being on them when it's obivous baout the girl who's sister jsut died in front of her.

2 god modding life isnt that perfect if there someoen whos lfie is that paerfect ill punch them myself.

3 being told ot change or delete my character because of its name.

4 People who dont know how ot be polite ooc.

5 People who don't understand "Jack of all trades and a master of none." - You can KNOW how to do alot of things whether your actually able to execute them or not is up to fate and jazzhands.

I do this as a filler text but I love to do it to give the reader something to laugh at since some of the stuff I do can be silly.

My only real pet peeve is the use of 'I' and 'you/your' in emoting.

Example
Out at the Quicksand, place is packed and within emote/say range of some guy in the corner with his woman.

Randomguy 'I grab your hand and carefully pull you in for a kiss on the cheek'

Me: Dude! I don't know you!

I really only have two.

*When people make character altering decisions for me .
*Take control of my character.

Note though, so far none of that experienced in this game.

Other than that, it's all gravy.

Playing some character, maybe on Balmung, maybe not.

I've never had the combat issues that others have had because I've always either:
a) trusted the person I'm RPing with to not beat the crap out of my character and let me have them beat the crap out of him for them (they leave it open ended, I decide what to do, I leave mine open-ended)
b) discussed it before hand
c) Used out of game rolling to decide what hits and what doesn't.

....
my biggest pet peeve is when my posts get eaten.  I am on a PS4 so I gotta retype EVERYTHING slightly differently so it can go through.

Also the whole thought emotes.  It's like....cool but I can't do anything with it >.<
I like the weird faces some people describe their characters having and you can kinda imagine what the thought emote would be. I know someone who does this really well and I always get a kick out of RPing with him.

Personally, I'd like to be able to improve on detailing the slight gestures my character does that are his weird quirks....he taps his chin a lot when thinking and his gaze wanders quite a bit because he's kinda easily distracted by things around him. I'd like to be able to vary it a bit more ...that's a pet peeve about myself though. ...maybe see others put more thought into the little things?

I think I have to echo a number of people here. I really have problems with the issue with vanishing posts or posts that aren't seen or whatever problem SE has had since they did the chat limitation back in 2.0.

People being physical in /em instead of /p or other means of RP channels. I'm not interested in reading your smooching, lipbanging, and so on and so forth...

People being unrealistically open and giving out way TMI to me when we're still not even friends. I try to treat my RP conversations as I would IRL, and certain topics I don't touch with people I have just met and that I don't consider even a friend yet. I'd like to see some more formal behavior around, or hell, even distrust. There is an awful lack of distrusting people. But then again, there kicks in the "Being extrovert is the only way to find RP!" argument. *shrug*

What else, hmmm.....

Oh yeah, out-of-place equipment. Swimsuits in Coerthas, weddings dresses in... well... not-weddings. And worst of all, wedding dresses when attending someone else's wedding. It's rude to look as pretty/prettier than the spouse, peeps!

(EDIT: Also, non-virgin spouses marrying in a white dress. An american friend told me it's not too uncommon there, but here in Italy it's considered of Very Bad taste, as the white dress is the symbol of purity and chastity. A VIP recently married in white even though she already had two kids, the news went on complaining about it for a month. But this can be considered nitpicky on my part.)

To be an interesting, intriguing, well-written character, there needs to be something to allow the audience to relate to them. That is what the problem is with who wants their character to be "perfect". Perfect characters will never be strong, and strong characters will never be perfect, because WE (those who read, who watch, who RP) are not perfect.

"What makes a strong character is how they deal with their flaws, their fears, their turmoils, their troubles that get in the way. That's what makes them relatable." -- N.C.
