Hi all!

I am a new player within FFXIV, however, truly I played the game last year but I was forced to leave it because of other duties. Nevertheless, I am going to come back and here comes my request.

I want to start writing/creating the story of my character, but I don't know what the main principles of the world are. Where could I find a source which introduces me to the universe chronologically?

I know that there are a lot of threads here on forum; they are mainly discussions. I also know that there is a wiki website and the fandom one. Nonetheless, I deeply wish to create a hero who will be logicial to the given world. Thanks a lot.

I don't mean this to sound rude at all, but playing the game is honestly the best way to feel out the world and it's concepts. There's a plethora of sources for sure of the finer details on things but as for canon order of events and understanding the physics of the universe... Playing through the MSQ and maybe any interesting side quests to you would be your best bet. Observing the NPC's both in the main story and the side ones that just so happen to live around Eorzea. You'd be surprised how much you can learn just by talking to a random generic NPC that's standing off to the side doing nothing, like how they talk, political reasons they're there, issues they're dealing with that may be common, etc.

If you like videos though and want to learn specifics in the game's story that you may have already played or you just want a finer grasp of... I've often liked this channel for videos about lore.

He goes into pretty good details about particular events that have happened in FF14's history. While the videos may be long, they're very descriptive and go into decent order of when what happened and what it caused. Good luck and most importantly, have fun!

I have to second Valic on this one. The absolute best place to get a feel for the world and its lore is to actually play the game and really read its story. Do every side quest, talk to random NPCs about each town. In each town there's at least one NPC who tells you who they or their faction are and a little about the history of the town. (The 1.0 version of the game did a much much better job with world building lore, but to find that you'll have to go digging, unless I've already covered the topic.) There's also a lore book that is sold on the Square Enix Online Store, however, do note that there are several factual errors as it's still the 1st Edition draft.

Valic also mentioned Ethys Asher's videos, and while I'm a pretty big fan of his work I should also say that - for the sake of the video's time - certain topics are condensed and occasionally have misinformation. Ethys is pretty good about going back in his comments and correcting mistakes though!

But avoid finalfantasy.wikia (Final Fantasy Wiki) like the plague. It has a huge problem with not sourcing its information and there's a lot of misinformation swirling around the site's pages.

I guess last I should throw in my own resource. If you're looking to sit down and read sourced lore on various topics without having to search through a bunch of different online websites like chrysaliswiki and gamerescape or in game, then check out my own index of lore compilations which can be found here or in my sig on any of my posts. As well as the compilations in that thread, I've also linked additional posts and compilations that I've written in other places on the RPC and on my tumblr in the drop down (spoiler) menus.

Hope that helps! ^^ And if you have any questions, feel free to ask here on the forums!

Ethys is a goldmine for very specific details and advanced lore, but I wouldn't advise everything on it to lore beginners.

By watching Ethys vids it's also best to keep in mind that there is two main kinds of vids on his channel:

- Lore coverage like the one on Ala Migho or the story (1.0, or Bindings Coils of Bahamut, etc). It's accessible and very extensive. When he covers something, he does it in depth.

- Most of his vids, especially the older ones, are actually more about musings and speculation based on lore facts or what he knew when he did the video. Because of that a lot of his older vids are a bit obsolete or state facts that we know to be wrong now (like Ascians being tier 1 Voidsent for example). I wouldn't advise to watch those when you don't already know the lore because they mix a good amount of very interesting lore facts and his own speculations.

In short Ethys is a great source of lore and ponderings, but you have to be careful when watching unprepared.

Thank you all for answers! I will check all options, namely, watch some videos on youtube mentioned by you, but throughout the game too.

I am going to create a character, probably, on the Omega server, because I have noticed that it is unofficial an RP server when it comes to EU.

Maybe some players will help the new one and introduce me to the given world either. Gladly I am not new in the final fantasy franchise, I played previous installments in the past, mainly FFVIII which was the game of my childhood and is my favourite one.

This is also good advice and, what is more, a great job bringing up these entries which can be pretty useful.
