Aveline Wrote:The names of the gods are what get me. I constantly have to look up Nymeia, for example. "Roegadyn" just sounds so clunky on the tongue, I usually shorten it to Roeg (pronouncing it "rogue").
I'm still trying to memorize the entire FFXIV pantheon too. For some reason, it's been a lot harder than it was in other games, though that may just be due to how sparse the information is about each one - I really haven't seen anything beyond the little blurbs in the character creation screens.

As for pronunciation, I tend to lean toward Japanese-esque annunciations. So "Roegadyn" struck me as Row-aa-gah-dyen.

I could have sworn it was Tau-ma-turj.

But apparently, I'm wrong. the TH is correct.

Thaum refers to magic in fantasy terminology. It is pronounced thawm.

Thaumaturge is one who works magic.

I had no idea! Thank you for that explanation, that makes so much sense Tongue

Although I'm pretty sure it wasn't canon, sometimes my FFXI character (Ruro-Kuro) would discuss obscure points of magical theory, in which a "thaum" was a unit of measurement of magical power. I'm pretty sure I appropriated that from Terry Pratchett's Discworld, though. Tongue

I love you

Thaumaturgy was an accepted term outside of the diskworld, but Terry Pratchett was the one who claimed the thaum as the basic unit of magic.

So your second option would be the closest one.

What? Square-Enix actually implement something that people want? Oh, such dreams, such dreams..

Any~way, something I've noticed is that a lot of people still refer to the world as Eorzea, when Hydaelyn (sp? I never remember where the "a" goes) is the name of the world itself. Eorzea = Aldenard continent and Vylbrand island.

I am still, and likely always will, refer to them as Galka. And I will frequently call the others Mithra, Tarus, Elvaan, and Humes. Given this very particular scenario with SE "adapting" the previous races (and the fact I find the previous names to be easier to say/remember/use) I find little problem with this (so long as it's not in an IC context). Especially since I imagine most of the people who'll play XIV also played XI so they'll be familiar with these terms.

I also keep trying to devise new abbreviations for the classes. So far I'm up to PUG, THM, ACR, GLD, MAD, BOT, MNR, etc. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there were already a list of these up somewhere that have been all approved and discussed and such and I'm just woefully uninformed. Tongue
