... but, no. Sadly, at the moment, there is neither a workaround, nor any comment from SE about potentially expanding the character limit, to my knowledge. It definitely was never this limited in FFXI, and that is even factoring in the addition of surnames in XIV.
Honestly, it's so bad I almost wonder if some ambitious tech. person (like the fine folks who made FFXI Windower) will try and come up with an external plug-in/box where you can type whatever you want, and it does the job of properly cutting it up in to bite-sized, half-Twitter pieces to send.
