As long as you are not afraid of the... well some negativity that may happen once it comes up (and it may come up very early or it may come up late), I think it all depends on who you are roleplaying with and how you deal with it.
it's my experience that some characters are very chatty and something that is supposed to be a secret will blow out into the Quicksand open in a fortnight. Hell, you may be the talk of Quicksand in the morning. How would you respond? Will you take the (possibly inevitable) ooc criticisms?
The person I mentioned had at one point very much considered completely retconning the character etc. I don't know if they decided to or not but I've seen them sort of start to really react to the negativity surrounding their character's backstory.
