A lot of people here, from what I've seen, like to stick to lore. Some like to stick to it as much as possible yet bend it around for enjoyment factor, others stick to it like chewing gum under your classroom table. They don't budge nor bend and that shit is hard to get off too. Some just don't even regard the lore at all and throw in their blonde haired Kirito from an alternate dimension of SAO that sounds like Cloud Strife and is totally just and brooding in the world of Eorzea.
It's less of "FELLO DEES RULZ OR U DON GET ARPEES" and more of just finding the people that are accepting of your character and it's uniqueness or people that don't mind roleplaying with you. As I said before, sometimes you don't tell people your backstory and just move on. A lot of roleplay that I've had tends to look at what's going on now rather than what's happened in the past. There's been quite a few times where I forget I have a character backstory because I don't mention it that often. It's really a guideline.
