I think most people are pretty understanding about stuff like that. Real life does, after all, take priority over anything related to an online game. Time-zones are pretty problematic as well - and often made extra annoying by the inability to add people to one's friends list unless they're online at the same time that you are.Â
I usually just try to keep people as informed as I can though. I don't think an apology is explicitly necessary for such a scenario but it can help to let people know if only to spare them the feeling that they've done something wrong/aren't interesting enough/are being blown off.
Ideally people will just assume that real life did get in the way, mind you, but they can get the wrong idea if they don't get contacted by someone who offered them role-play and then they see that same person replying to other threads/interacting with other individuals.
It is a two-way street though. Sometimes it's their responsibility to show the initiative to see if the situation can be salvaged or whether it's best to go separate ways.
