If I'm a Lalafellin trader in Thanalan, and I'm used to having to travel over the ground past all sorts of creatures that the very in-game-canon says really want to eat me (read some of the fate descriptions around Horizon), this becomes pretty important to me.
If I'm a (insert non-combatant person) traveling through (insert area filled with ground threats) and I find out that flying mounts exist suddenly, you bet your tuckus that I'm suddenly interested.
If I'm a Brass Blade, and I can suddenly fly over those Amal'jaa and drop firesand bombs on their positions, instead of putting myself in danger, you bet I want a flying Chocobo.
If I'm a Limsan Pirate captain, darned right I'm keeping a flying Chocobo on board, for the same kind of bombing runs against Garlean ships.
In fact, SE is going to have to spend a little time enforcing to us that flying mounts are terribly rare if they expect us to continue to take a LOT of their lore seriously. The reintroduction of air power in Eorzean hands (remember - Airships are RARE right now and Garlean Air Power is part of their threat) is a major plot point that.... well, I'm gonna be that guy and say it. I don't think SE is going to have thought this all the way through, but I will accept pleasant surprises, because frankly, I WANT to be wrong about it.
