Polo was originally played in Persia and Central Asia somewhere between the 6th century BCE to the 1st century CE. Â It later spread throughout the Middle East and into India and China. Â It wasn't even known to Europeans (outside of a brief stint in the Byzantine Empire somewhere during the 4th century CE) until the 1800s, when the British picked it up in India.
