Oh waifu! I didn't know you wanted a mount, I have this Floating Eye for you! Wait, you don't want to be high, so a voidsent, yes yes! Riding the mount of pure evil into battle!
But on a serious note, I think they were numerous enough to have as a mount. To get one as a mount, I believe they're semi-intelligent more so than other beasts, so I take the bonding would take a special strong willed individual.
Game limitations and such, remember 1.0 was more of an alpha experiment instead of an actual game.
