One possibility to get your feet wet would be to show up at the Grindstone if your character is interested in martial conflict. It would be a good way to engage in some combat, meet some friendly rivals, and network outwards. I'll leave the particulars of that to Warren since he's much more involved in it than I.

As far as being a sellsword goes, part of the problem of being "for hire" is that it relies on somebody else to find something that requires hiring your character. However, your interest in hitting a Castrum provides an angle there. It wouldn't be too difficult to find a couple of people interested in performing a small raid on one of the Castrum for a specific objective, however minor - stealing some supplies for an NPC employer, for example - or acquiring some lost token from her husband that she's been made aware is in Centri or Meridianum.Â

This needn't be a very large group - two, no more than three other players - so you can assemble it without feeling the pressure to run it as a formal event.

Potential angle: sellsword character is down on her luck after a long drought of work, and hangs around the Quicksand drunkly pestering anyone and everyone she can for any jobs that need doing that would pay gil. Character gets loud, folks chime in trying to get her to calm down, someone eventually starts a one-on-one with her, etc.

Another possibility: you roll into town on the backend of a job, looking to make a delivery. You're tired, dirty, and exasperated because all you have is a name and no face, no means of contact for finding this person you're supposed to deliver the goods to because the gods-damned bastard didn't show up at the Coffer & Coffin or the Missing Member or w/e. So you start walking the streets yelling at the top of your lungs.

A third: you overhear folks talking, and it turns out so-and-so is a Garlean expatriate. You run into so-and-so later and decide that if you can't get at the Garlean soldiers, you might as well pick a fight with so-and-so.

idk, just throwing ideas out there. The best place to start, imo,Â is always, "What kind of character is my character? What would they be doing on a normal, averageÂ day for themÂ that would catch someone else's interest? How can I shoulder my way into someone else's business in a perfectly natural way?"

Hitting up Castrum Centri as a normal RP environment would better allow you to be free with RPing text wise than CM. No time limit. You don't -have- to have 8 people. You can also see about running Castrum Meridianum without RP text inside but with the pre-agreed notion that you are stealthily hitting several high officers in the location or to question them etc. When the duty is finished, you RP out the consequences. Information learned or item found etc.

Doesn't even have to be Centri or Meridianum, mind you.There's also Cape Westwind (overworld, not the trial) and Castrum Occidens available in Western Thanalan and Eastern La Noscea, respectively.

What I REALLY want is access to the castrum that's visible from the southern edge of East Shroud (I forget the name). It has these giant generators... it's so tempting....

It's ok there are healers.

Kage has gone out of his way to not be particularly destructive when he fought. He saw it as a way for growth and discipline.

I mean, with killing, it should only really be considered murder if you deal the killing blow, such as stabbing someone in the heart or cutting their head off. Otherwise if you get youre chest slashed open and you're blood spurts everywhere, you will be most likely fine as long as a healer get's to you. I remember that last grindstone, I did nearly kill someone by stabbing them in their chest with a knife, basically cut the side of their chest open and cut their skull open a little. The fighter was fine afterwards, though a bit shaken mentally most likely. My point is that as long as you dont 'intend' or have a 'killing intent' about you when fighting someone, then you most likely wont get into trouble.

That is a terribly off topic point though so now I will make a legitimate point regarding to the original purpose of the thread.

Grindstone is a good way to get thing's going. As well as scheduled Tavern RP, but with some RPers (and me because this happened to me back when I started. I dont do it anymore.) Want to make the story center around themselves. While there is no issue with doing that, personal RP centered around a few people should never be forced on others who do not have an interest. With that said, playing the side character is always good too because then you get to RP with others and have deep and meaningful character and relationship development. That and when you run off and do personal RP, people are more likely to follow you if you invested time into their characters and they have invested into you.

Name of the game is to give and receive in equal measure.

I can sort of kind of relate. I don't exactly feel like I'm in the outside looking in because OOCly, I am friends with a wide variety of folks from all different parts of the server and it's wonderful. Everyone is extremely friendly and kind - it really makes me appreciate the RP community in FFXIV far more than any RP community I've been in in other MMOs.

Unfortunately, I can be CRIPPLINGLY SHY and thus, haven't RPed with all of these awesome people very much even though I adore them all OOC. (If I poked you going "AMG LET'S RP!" and then haven't followed up, this is why. :V) I want to RP with soooo many people so bad - and I KNOW a lot of people wouldn't mind at all if I just ran up and tried RPing with them! But I hit a brick wall in not knowing how to initiate RP and afterwards give my characters a reason to keep chatting folks up. It's not quite as difficult on my more social characters like Leilani or Furious Storm, but on more broody-dork characters like Tiergan, it can be tough.

I think that is the main problem that perhaps many people face when trying to Kool-Aid Man their way into some RP - cooking up a catalyst or a reason why you might interact with people who are either strangers or just acquaintances you don't know very well.

In real life, we become friends with each other because some scenario draws us together. Perhaps we work together, or engage in the same activity, or have the same goals - in RP, sometimes that stuff has to be constructed.

I'm trying to brainstorm a plot for myself that basically gives me a free excuse to hunt down anyone I want for RP, but I still have to work out the details in it. If it works out and becomes the magical key for RP-times, I'll let you know how I went about things. :>

To comment on that off-topic Grindstone thing:

No, no one has ever died at the Grindstone, and finishing your opponent in a way that would otherwise leave them dead is (at the discretion of the people running it) grounds for removal. I've personally been present for someone being banned because they no-sold every attack and were aiming for lethal blows. If your match ended with you literally carving someone up that way and blood gouting everywhere, I can practically guarantee you that there was OOC discussion on whether or not you should be allowed to continue.

Killing someone at the Grindstone canonically ends with everybody in charge drawing weapons and quartering you.

The "do not kill" rule extends to "Do not try to kill." Healers can heal, but they cannot bring someone back to life. As such, there's no "Oh, I tore his heart out, but it's your fault for not healglueing it back into place fast enough" kind of nonsense.

tl;dr: Don't be retarded and aim lethal blows, it makes for shit roleplay and no one likes it. Blood's fine, but openly looking to maim is for edgelords.

On topic: Tiergan I've never gotten that tell I am heartbroken.
