It's my preferred way of dealing with this, too. You can embellish the sentence and such as you choose, but it means you get to move forward with the RP without trying to explain things you don't know about!

I'm not mathematically inclined or anything like that, but my character is one of those "genius" characters. But I RP him as book-smart with little to no common sense. Now what does that mean...I mean that in terms of personal interactions, his attitude, judgment skills, etc. he's not that smart. (He's the type of guy who will sell his soul to a voidsent just to see what would happen and then ask his friends to help him get out of it when he's bored of it).Â

But when it comes to RPing what he IS knowledgable about, I, as the RPer, took it upon myself to learn as much lore about the stuff as possible so I wouldn't gloss over details. Â For example, I won't type:

/emote gives a long winded explanation on aether and Allag.

I would type out the specifics of that explanation, even if it OOCly bores the player I am RPing with xPP
I am pretty dedicated to that lore OOCly so I can have my character ICly talk about it. It's more...realistic? A lot of my RP is super specific to that lore and in-game world mechanics that it'd be impossible to just gloss over stuff.

The good thing about Deathnote and most people who RP geniuses is that Light, like most Genius RPers was fooled by a simple bait and switch. Its not hard to beat people who try too hard.

I play a character who is smart in technical and historical matters, but in other respects is a giant idiot.

It makes it easier! The stuff in FFXIV isn't real, so I can make up whatever tech/alchemy/sciencey stuff I please for the most part. No one knows the physiological effects of a hi-potion.

In other matters I have the choice to be as smart or as stupid as eva is.

I think all smart characters (or people) are dumb in a lot of areas. If you OOCly don't pick up on something your genius character should, then just play it off as a slip up, or maybe them just deciding to keep their mouth shut.

That works sometimes but then there are occassionally people like my friends who are basically the great wall of china only assembled around my character's cock. They live for the blockage. Some people will make it their agenda to mess you up then point out your slip ups as much as possible.

Star Trek historically handles this very well. Watch any episode of TNG where Geordi La Forge and Wesley Crusher have to solve some technical problem.

Medicine or goldsmithing or anything else like that don't have to work like they do in the real world, because FF is significantly different. Magic suffuses everything. So you can start in on the handwavium and merely make it look promising and come off as a genius:

"It appears to be magnetically sealed. ...I believe I can reverse the polarity by attenuating the aetheric servo..."

Hah, I actually did this once by talking about dark matter being used to fix a hole in a robe.Â Not the kind of conversation you'd have realworld-wise.Â

I don't actually like doing that though and I'd rather try to build in some realism that isn't necessarily present in Eorzea.Â For example, we don't all walk around with a goldsmithing bench tucked up our butts that we conveniently withdraw every time we'd like to make some earrings.

If you play a techinical genius in a subject you know nothing about, just be prepared to learn when it matters.

If you play a "I can figure out anything genius" .... yeah no.Â If you can do it without metagaming, you'll be the first I've ever seen

As for death note, that end game was seriously just the biggest godmodding off it seriously boiled down to "well even though you do all of this to stop this from happening, I'm just so good at it I win."Â So I feel like that's a bad example.

Star Trek though, did a great job by comparing everything to a much simpler analogy.
