Sorry I fell behind on this! But part 9 of the census is here and this one focuses on literacy rate! We know very little about the education in Eorzea, so unfortunately I had to change "educational level" to "literacy."

So let's hear it. Can your main character read? Write? Both? Neither?

Please note that by qualifying for any of these options, the character must be reasonably versed in the Eorzean language. They'd be able to read, write, and/or speak with relative ease and seldom struggle save for larger vocabulary words maybe.

Please use your own better judgment to determine where your character falls.

I've also included speech in this poll (even though that's not -technically- related that much to literacy...but it's an interesting addition I think!). As an added bonus, let us know if your character is versed in other languages like Garlean, beastman languages, etc!

First vote.~ *Gets shot*

Ryanti's family gets all the credit for this. He could afford all of the fine, soul-stealing private education he received. That and books, books, books.

His statement in my sig is his handwriting, and he can obviously speak, and read.

So he's pretty much proficient in all terms of literacy.

JJ is able to read, write and speak. But his level of reading/writing is not above, say, a 9th grade level. He ain't winning any spelling bees, but he's not a potato.

Rakka'li is a poor reader/writer, but he's not completely incapable. I guess he leans more towards only being able to speak, so I'll go with that.

Rhio can read, write, and speak multiple languages. Many of these languages are completely useless for her current environment and geographic circumstances. She is fluent in the Garlean tongue thanks to Deirdre and also can muddle through a little bit of the languages of beastmen.

Both Caden and Ailith can read and write a few different languages, but I wonder; will there be a census based on mathematics and scientific knowledge? I've been curious lately because with all the Magitek (spelling) armor and things that are around, I wonder if it would be possible to have a crafting class such as a Mechanic. Hrm...either way, Ailith falls into that category.

Eva is well-read, having worked at a book shop for over a decade, and can write very eloquently (usually in her journal). She is not quite as elegant in verbal communication but she's come a long way.

Written communication is actually a strongly regarded aspect of her culture and upbringing.

Quick question, doesn't reading and writing kind of go hand and hand?

In terms of Eorzean. Ship is completely illiterate. He cannot read or write, and becomes fairly grumpy if it's pointed out to him.

I think this question is so interesting! I'll be intrigued to see what everyone puts down, though it's leaning rather heavily in one direction right now. It's made me think harder about some character aspects, which I always enjoy.

Ugh, I could go into a whole spiel about this, but I won't.

The short answer is no. Reading is a receptive skill while writing is a productive one. It takes less fluency in the target language to read effectively, but far more to write effectively.

For example: 薔薇 means rose in Japanese. I can read it, but I can't write it.

EDIT: For an English comparison, think about people who can read complex words (receptive), but cannot spell them (productive).

This poll has me a bit curious, how does one speak and write, but not read?  Does this imply that a person(race?) is self taught in such an informal way that only they can comprehend what they write?  Or is there any way to interoperate this?

I think I'm actually very interested in trying to put this element into my character~
