Oh yeah I've had a person start spamming that one .. spell (it's like this big blue sphere) over where we were RPing over and over.

I asked them nicely to stop as it was making my husband nauseated. Â The player said that he doesn't like RPers and why did we have to come to his server or some crap.

I told him that he is more than free to block us so he doesn't need to see the RP, but we cannot block his spell graphics. Â He stopped after that /shrugs

Normally I don't acknowledge trolls, but that was affecting someone OOCly.

Screw it. And don't put in party, keep it out in say that way other RPers know you are around and can join in ^^.

Edit: Also, Blessed, the best course of action is to just ignore them. I don't even ask them to stop because then it acknowledges them. Completely ignoring them usually gets them to leave in 10 minutes or less. Responding to them in any sort of way just extends the time as they feel like they then have someones attention. When I RP I don't look at my screen anyway, I just stare at the chat box, haha.

I find that fighting these things with a big dose of sugary kindness works best! Next time, try something like the following via a private tell:

A lot of people will play poke-the-role-player if they just see you as a character, but if you make it clear that there's a nice person on the other end too they'll usually relent immediately. Even the truest jerks will rarely continue to harass you when they see you're all flowers and sunshine! It's just not fun to try and annoy someone that's unflappably full of joy!

I actually have a 100% success rate with this approach! Give it a try!

...and Yini beat me to saying it. I will say that we were RPing last night and a couple of trolls wandered up. She brought out that approach? They left nicely, with no hurt feelings on either side. Just stay polite, ask nicely that you not be bothered, and if they persist in being a jerk remind them about Harassment being a bannable violation of the Terms of Service and that you're getting screenshots of this. That usually gets the ones who don't NEED to be banned off your back.

In fairness, the whole 'lol trolls r no lifers wif no friends lol' angle doesn't really hold much merit and is full of the same misconceptions and stereotyping that is sent the way of role-players. Just because someone acts like a bit of an idiot at times it doesn't mean they're without friends, a real life or are truly a terrible person. It's usually just a bit of fun to them. Tasteless fun, sure, but it's hardly the crime of the century.

Heck, I know a lot of players who would be interested in role-play if not for the abundance of role-players with questionable character concepts, the obsession with ERP and various other factors such as the vast levels of drama that inevitably pop up in role-playing communities. I'd have to seriously scratch my head in confusion if someone honestly can't see why role-players have such a poor reputation given the sort of horror stories that can be told regarding the goings on beneath the surface.

As a new but adamant RPer, I can honestly say my experiences with RP have been about 50% good, 50% terrible. There are a lot of selfish and/or OOC dramatic members in our community who seem to harbor unfair grudges against new rpers or pvers. A lot of good RP gets ruined by rpers who don't play well with others, and only think for themselves. Therefore, our community gets an unfair rap (I'd like to point out there are a lot of selfish pvers too)

A lot of RP hate that I see comes from rpers 'ruining' dungeons by being IC when running with straight pvers. I personally don't see the problem in this; the game is meant to be fun, and I just don't get intolerance towards other people's approaches to having fun, unless it seriously inhibits other people's fun.

I think Yini has it right; a lot of misconception can be dispelled from kindness. Gently informing them that they rolled on an unofficial RP server, so that they'll see a lot of us, would be a good way to break the ice ^^

Some people in my shell commented on being approached by creepers asking for ERP. I read about such a case on this forums a while back but I imagined it to be totally isolated if not exaggerated or even fabricated. So I guess there's no denying it. Even if I have yet to encounter it myself(bar the FC called ERP), there is that sect that only gives reason for non-RP'ers to be weirded out by us, as J'hared stated.

This totally happens, and is just plain weird. I was on my tank-y alt yesterday and got a random tell from someone saying hello, and being my usual nice self, I replied back, only to have the person start trying to hint about wanting to do some ERP. I think this is the first time that's ever happened to me in a game like, well, ever. It's weird.

To the overall topic, there's lots of reasons why people might be confused or dislike RPers, just as people might be confused or dislike, say, hardcore PvPers. The important thing is to be respectful to the other party and let them have their fun. I wouldn't go into PvP teams to throw matches or join raids just to wipe them; likewise, I think it's only fair to get the same level of respect for what I like to do (i.e., RP) in return. Griefing or trolling anyone for any reason is inappropriate.

I once had someone hit on one of my characters, and then propose to her within 20 mins of meeting her. He then magically made her a ring that had the inscription 'though you hide your wings, you are an Angel' on it.

I give you kudos for roleplaying in a fate, I love action roleplay! whenever I see people like this i tend to say somethings along the lines of (poor you.. coming to the server that everyone roleplays on. Must suck for you<3)

on a side note the talk about being asked about erp, surprisingly I have been hit on more on my lalafell, (includingÂ by people who didn't roleplay wanting to erp with me)Â then I have been on my Miqote, my elezen and my highlander combined @.@

I've taken a break from role-playing my Miqo'te simply due to the unfortunate trend of a lot of Miqo'te role-play revolving around creepy ERP requests or perhaps even worse tweenage style romance drama. The amount of times I see the exact same role-players going on and on about how 'cute' it'd be if their Miqo'te shagged each other is beyond ridiculous. It seems to make up a good portion of the discussion going on in certain Linkshells.

Granted, this isn't anything new - the exact same issue afflicted Night Elf and Blood Elf role-play back in WoW, so there's definitely portions of the role-playing community that deserve to be mocked for their behaviour. It's just a shame the rest of us are often tarnished with a similar brush by association.
