The easiest way to handle this: Use your imagination and act as if they aren't even there. Have a thick skin, as with MMO's-you will have lots of people looking to either annoy you or are just oblivious.

Maybe I been playing for too long, but this seem's almost like a non-issue. Just let it go and RP away! Big Grin

The problem is, there's this implication that I'm allowing it to bother me, like asking people to stop antagonizing me is some act of aggression. And I don't think of it that way. I honestly couldn't give a rat's furry little back side what people do with the time they pay for. If they want to get naked and dance on tables for 6 days straight they're well within their rights to do so, and it's not my place to tell them they can't.

However, I expect a certain amount of respect and civility from people, and I don't believe there's anything wrong with asking for that. And in situations where the harassment goes beyond simple disruption and into the realm of vulgarity, I'm completely within my rights as a consumer to report them for violations of the terms of service, which they have agreed to abide.

The thing is, griefing is a problem. And problems don't go away by ignoring them.

I think we're from two different books.

I don't EXPECT anyone to respect me at all. If I want respect, I EARN it. I earn my respect from non-rpers by being non combative and not thinking I AM BETTER THAN THEM. I will not tell them how to play just as much as I won't let them tell me.

Anyway, that's my 2 gil. This is obviously just going to go back and forth and eventually make me angry so I'll withdraw from the thread. I think it's wrong that you advocate anything other than self-empowerment, but hey maybe you're more comfortable thinking people OWE you something.

A couple of times I've actually included trolls in the RP, which seems to greatly confuse them, and sends them packing xD

Otherwise I just ignore them. Trolls are trolling cuz they crave attention, usually of the negative variety. They feed off it. I don't bother with giving them the satisfaction.

It's called mutual respect. It's what normal, civilized people do. When you meet people you're polite and courteous to them out of mutual respect. Unless you just run up to strangers and slap them? There's just no reason in the world to be rude to people. Everyone should be polite and respectful of others.

I don't know where you're getting that I am being combative from? Again, this is implying that this is some sort of retaliation, done out of passion. I can assure you, my exchanges with trolls are free of combat. It consists of pleases, thank yous, and have a nice days. I'm not being snarky or sarcastic when I say it, I am being sincere. I treat them with the sort of respect I would like to see them extend to me, and in my experience, it works. It's not that I don't advocate self empowerment, it's that I prefer peaceable resolutions, rather than leaving a problem to fester.

I haven't meant to imply I am better than anyone, and I'm not sure how you glean that from anything I've said. I'm not trying to tell you your opinion is wrong, because it is your opinion, and opinions are not objective. I'm just utterly flummoxed about what the actual contention between us here is. Your tone makes it sound as though you're upset, I thought we were having a friendly discourse about the social ramifications of trolling.

I respect the fact you don't want to be in an argument (which I didn't think of this as), since they tend to be rather grating on the nerves. Though I would rather you not depart thinking I'm some sort of raving asshole over some sort of miscommunication that could yet be resolved.

My friends, and  I, have been subjected to the immature troll behavior as well. On numerous occasions actually. I find it rather pathetic how those people feel the need to be disruptive. I have found out the best way to get rid of the troll is to ignore the troll. Put them on ignore, and report them for harassment. If you try to ask them nicely to stop, they'll just laugh at you, and focus even harder on trolling the role play. That is what they do. I know it can be hard to ignore them, but at least try to.

All right, so just to clarify a few things, because apparently clarification is needed.

1) I am not thin-skinned. I was not posting this as a "QQ this guy ruined our RP I'm so sad" thread, more of a "Lol look at this asshole" thread, because while his crafting was hardly disruptive to the point where our RP could not continue, I did find it funny that out of aaaaallllll the spots in the Quicksand where he could have crafted, he chose smack dab in the middle of our table, so obviously it was intentional. It was meant for lulz, not for raging.

2) I make liberal use of my blacklist for trolls like the ones who showed up after our crafting friend here. As should everyone. Ignoring them is by far the best course of action, because they feed on attention and even a simple "Your life must be so sad, that you can waste time in a pay-to-play game disrupting others' enjoyment of the game" will only feed their sad little game and encourage their behavior.

3) To whichever poster it was playing devil's advocate, no, we cannot make them respect our desire to RP in the game, nor is there really anything we or Square can do to force them to stop, but having your jimmies at least a little rustled that they do it is not being a crybaby bitch about it. It is a justifiable reaction and something that these forums are, in part, here for. So don't be surprised or offended or exasperated or whatever when someone throws up a thread about trolls where they just want to blow off a little steam.

I'm not here to dumb down what your saying, but atleast you don't have a FC dedicated to trolls.

Those Taint guys, that is harassment. Use the report button that is what it is there for. Sorry that happened to you Sad

GM's are reading our reports even though they are probably swamped due to first month chaos an all that. I sent a report in a few days ago (about something completely different not role play harassment) I was contacted by a GM in game in /tells about it yesterday and had a conversation about it, was nice to see they are reading and acting on reports.

Most stuff I ignore, I am often pretty oblivious to what is going on around me a lot of the time anyway, not always a good thing in dungeons Blush

Very recently, I was standing in the Ul'dah Adventure's Guild and watching a guy stand on the table and cast spells in everyone's face.

I had a very in-depth conversation with him, asking him if he had anything better to do with his day than to try and kill someone else's enjoyment of the game. The response I got? "I'm bored and I don't get RP or people that pretend. Why pay for this game if you aren't going to play it?"

I informed him that being bored isn't necessarily a good reason to bother other people that aren't, and that you don't necessarily have to get something in order to have respect for it. I also told him that it was horrid to assume someone is playing a game wrong. I used the recent GTA V as an analogy, stating that some choose to play the missions while some never do one and just run around--and challenged him to tell me who was playing the game wrong.

He said, "I guess you're right" and left the people alone. Either because he was tired of me harassing them or because he really got an answer.

#3 would be me. To clarify my position on this:

You have every right...every right...to be irritated, frustrated, disheartened by being griefed.
I am not surprised or offended or exasperated or whatever by the posts that crop up concerning this at all. I am also not without compassion for yours or anyone's feelings on the matter.
I fully support SE implementing a structure to combat said behavior. UNTIL then, however, we only have a few options. Support group mentality, and/or self empowerment. I personally think that a mixture of those is healthy and stimulates a good community.

If every greifer runs our immersion, if every dickhole and jackass can sour our night, then why are we RPers? We're supposed to be the ones with the imagination. The creative ones. The ones that find joy in creating our OWN stories within the gameworld instead of just puppeteering an avatar. This isn't an instanced world - if it were, we wouldn't have these problems. This isn't a case where the Powers That Be will lay waste to the offenders with a ban hammer. So we are left pretty much to our own devices.

Maybe I misread your context. Maybe I came off as unsympathetic, and in light of your "it was for lulz" statement sympathy wasn't warranted in the first place. In either case, I apologize.

This doesn't change my standpoint of the empowered RPer, both in a community and of themselves. But I wanted to take the time to apologize to you personally if I offended.

I wasn't offended by what you said, and maybe I misread your context, who knows? I just wanted to lay down what I believed was an appropriate amount of QQing about trolls, which is, when you've had your fill, moan about it on the forum of your choice, then go back to whatever you were doing. Like I said, I make liberal use of the blacklist feature, and like you said, this was not a sympathy post. Just something to laugh at.

TL;DR Talking to people helps, sometimes.

I've spoke with a few 'trolls' back in WoW and ended up getting similar results, one conversation even resulted in a friendship and acting as a mentor for the guy in question.

Interestingly enough, the guy did something similar to me. He was jumping around on his mage and tossing down spells with AoE visual effects. I asked him politely to leave and...he seemed surprised I'd even acknowledged him. As it turned out, he'd been very eager to indulge in role-play and had transferred to my realm specifically for that purpose. Yet whenever he'd asked people for help getting started he'd been ignored. Not just once, mind you - but repeatedly and by many of the sickly sweet 'welcoming' players that were quick to put on a friendly face in public but weren't actually all that bothered about helping out players in the game itself.

So I had a pretty in-depth chat with him and helped him out. I even came to understand why he had decided to act that way. Over the years I encountered a pretty decent chunk of players who were in a similar position. It's surprising how many 'trolls' behave the way they do simply because the RP community has failed to reach out to them. Some people are just wankers for the sake of being wankers, though others have somewhat legitimate reasoning for their behaviour. I feel sorry for anyone who ends up slipping through the net as it's pretty easy for that to happen, especially when the majority of role-players end up sticking with their little groups and refuse to branch out or teach fresh blood the ropes.

That's very true. I've yet to meet a troll that I've acknowledged who hasn't, when confronted politely, agreed to leave or even apologized. This situation pains me; I'm happy you helped him but I feel that it must have hurt his feelings so much that people just ignored him back when he needed help. I always hope for better when I think of RPers, and of course I feel that those who neglected to reach out to him were exceptions to the rule. I hope at least. I'm never going to get mad over trolls because I know that many of them aren't just looking to be jerks, they're just doing things because they don't always realize how much it means.
