Having a background in both Conjury and Thaumaturgy might be helpful (tho it's probably good to remember that the two disciplines of magic don't work well together).  But it seems like Summoning is based on a similar -style- of magic to Arcanomancy, which would make having knowledge of Arcanomancy a real help to understanding the discipline.

point of reference for the summoner quests:

level 35: Austerities of Earth
Level 45: Austerities of Wind

For each quest, there is a requirement that you beat the primal that it is associated with.
