Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Trizzip - 08-26-2010

If my lore knowledge of Square serves correctly, those measurements are just another Square staple, such as the chocobo, moogle, etc. It's just one of those things that are all part of the same SE universe. I'll dig around and see if I can come up with some examples when I have time.

Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Trizzip - 08-26-2010

"The Elezen are a traditionally nomadic people who in former times claimed sole dominion over Eorzea, their presence predating that of the other races. Believe this prominence to be ordained by the gods, they came to develop an esteemed sense of honor and pride.

Their characteristically tall, slim physiques and elongated limbs are part of a successful adaptation to the land's various environments. Indeed, it is said that their highly sensitive ears can discern the squeak of a field mouse at a distance of up to several malms.

The Elezen perceived the immigration of the Hyur as tantamount to invasion, and as a result the two share a past plagued by warfare. At present, however, they can be seen coexisting peacefully, the exception being the reclusive Duskwight Elezen.
"

This is from the official FFXIV website where Elezens are described. I bolded the word 'malms'

Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - River - 08-27-2010

I'll add ilms and ponzes for the moment, at least. And yes, the gods and their moons are reflected in the top post exactly as they are reflected in the Beta.

Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Trizzip - 08-30-2010

Respectfully requests that this thread be moved to the Library and that a link to this thread be made in the Table of Contents sticky. Bonzai!

Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - River - 08-31-2010

I've also noted that Menphina's description notes that she's the goddess of the twin moons.

So it's possible we'll have a two-moon system. That may be why there is an Astral moon and an Umbral moon.

Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Tadir - 08-31-2010

I think it'll be moved to the library once the discussion is over and we have proof of all of this. Or a post containing the pertinent information will be made there. This is a discussion thread though.

Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Kejira - 09-05-2010

i wasn't really sure where else to put this *lays her ears down* so please correct me if you please

i was running around In Limsa Lominsa and happened to find myself in the Mealvaan's Gate (Arcanists' Guild), when i started to use Tap to target the Npc at the desk i happened to find a ??? spot and Thought "Ohh i seen this before in FFXI, maybe this will do something", so i tired and found some tomes telling about elements, times and the gods, but not sure what some of it mean, wrote it down and this is it,

???

A Number of ancient looking Tomes and Treatises adorn the shelf

Tome I

The Five Ages-an Eorzean Chonolygy

The Preface

Penned By lewphon of sharlayan. master Theologian and astrologist, in the year 233 of sixth Astral Era, to wear together the disparate historie of the nations with common thread-the thread of time. fir through its inevitable march the hours turn into suns, and they into moons, and they into years, and from the years come the ages of man. and ever eclipsing is the eternity of Gods.

Chapter I-The Suns
By the unit of a sole sun we mean the period which lasts for the duration of four cycles of six elemental hours- those of Ice, water, wind, Lightning, Fire and Earth. and so is the sun Twenty hours and four and so shall it ever be.

Chapter II
The Life of a single Moon spans four cycles of eight suns, and is thus the sum of thirty and two. The eight deriveth from the elements six, Ice, Water, Lightning, Fire, And Earth, And Polarities Two, Astral and Umbral.

Chaper III
The Year is made of the Moon Goeth round the two Astral and Umbral Poles, fluctuating between the six elements, and that in turn. In this, the year can be said to be length of twelve Moons

The first and second moon of the year are the first Astral and first umbral, and together they share an affinity with Ice. on their watch, all is Frozen, Breath of Life Sloweth to near silence beneath.

The second Astral and Second Umbral Moons come third and fourth in turn, and they are water of the Melting ice, and with their flowing slaketh the thirst of life again.

Fifth and Sixth are third Astral and Third Umbral Moons, and the Wind Bowed over the Water, carrying its Heavenly boons near and far,

The Fourth paring of Astral and Umbral Moons comes Seven and eight, when the heavens rageth with furies of Lightning, and Sendeth them below with godly terror to test the faith of Men.

The ninth and tenth Moon are Fifth Astral and Umbral, as the Lightning turns to fire, and it charreth growing life with the colors of its flames, bleeding blade and leaf with brilliant hues of crimson and scarlet. year's end cometh in the eleventh and twelfth Moons.

The Sixth Astral and Sixth Umbral In which Earth consumes all, for out of the ground we are taken for the dust we are, and to the dust we shall return.

Chapter IV-Of Man.
The Wisdom of the Twelve Saw fit to grant man with cycle of years, and in turn the reverence of man bound them to his gods-the year of the navigator, of the wanderer, of the builder, of the destroyer, of the warden, of the Traders, of the matron, of the Keeper, Of the Fury, of the Lovers, of the Scholar, and of the Spinner.
The turning of these years twelve is a sacred thing, and together they comprise on epoch of man, by which the Histories of his Endeavor are Measured

Chapter V-Of Gods
The constancy and eternity of time derive from the pulse and breath of the twelve. and by their divine will Brilliance of the Astral Eras which man Flourish and Prosper, and the shadow of the Umbral Eras which see man falter and Doubt, are visited upon him equal, neither the greater good nor the greater evil may escape their purview.

Since the peace among the Twelve was broken and life was created to wage in their wars, six cycles of Eras have come to pass in keeping with the elemental order. The Sixth Umbral Era Belonged to the Waters, as heavy rains fell and the sea rose High, submerging and cleansing all in a great delug. with time the waters receded, ushering in the present Sixth Astral Era during which man has again rebuilt his halls and tilled his lands.

Naught save the ken of the Twelve themselves knoweth when the seventh Umbral Era shall come and end our days. The sole certainty what resides within man is selfsame as it has ever been-ours is the power to make our Era what we might

Tome II

Essences & permutations-a Treaties of the Six Elements
Chapter I- The Six Nativities and Myriad Creation.
The spark of the Lightning Ignites when it strikes, and thus Fire is Born.
The Heat of Fire renders to ash all that it touches, and thus Earth is Born.
The density of Earth shuns Sun and Harbors cold, and thus Ice is born.
The amour of Ice Melts Away, and Thus Water is Born,
The Moistness of Water mists and rises and thus wind is born
The gusts and sighs of Wind gather the clouds, and thus Lightning is born.

Chapter II-The Three Conquests, Boundless and Unwavering
Earth Grounds Lightning
Water Erodes Earth.
Lightning boils Water

Cahpter III-The Three Submissions, Timeless and Unending.
Fire is Extinguished by Wind
Ice is Melted by Fire
Wind is obstructed by Ice.

Chapter IV-Dynamic opposites & the Bifurcation of Polarity.
The six elements are manifest in all things great and small, and their polarity deriveth from the Astral heavens above and the Umbral Depth Below.

So far from what i can read a Sole sun is made out of 4 hours of 6 elemental hours, as in the first 4 hours are thouse of Ice, the next 4 are thouse of water and so on, A week or Cycle is 8 suns and Moon is Four Weeks or Cycles

Hours of the day.
Ice: 24:01 to 04:00
Water: 04:01 to 08:00
Wind: 08:01 to 12:00
Lightning: 12:01 to 16:00
FIre: 16:01 to 20:00
Earth: 20:01 to 24:00

Hope this don't confuse to much

Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Magnus - 09-05-2010

Great information there!
So to summarize:
there are 24 hrs in a day. 32 days in a month. 12 months in a year.

Ice > wind
wind > fire
fire > ice

earth > lightning
lightning > water
water > earth

Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Trizzip - 09-05-2010

Magnus Wrote:there are 24 hrs in a day. 32 days in a month. 12 months in a year.

24 bells in a sun, 32 suns in a moon, 12 moons in a year. Tongue

This is the perfect place for that data Kejira, and thank you so much for posting it. A lot of it is information we already know, but the fact that there is lore that adds to it is simply fantastic.

One big takeaway that I feel should be added to the initial post is this:

Hours of the day.
Ice: 24:01 to 04:00
Water: 04:01 to 08:00
Wind: 08:01 to 12:00
Lightning: 12:01 to 16:00
FIre: 16:01 to 20:00
Earth: 20:01 to 24:00

Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - River - 09-05-2010

Updated. Hopefully I got all of that right.

Repost of a repost, and a bump to boot Smile

Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - River - 09-20-2010

I added some of it, but I think he's assuming a lot from the text. I'm not going to add his moon or month theories just yet, simply because I think he's wrong... but you never know. I added a link to his theory at the bottom of the first post.

Great job on keep that updated brotha' :approve:

Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Verence - 05-29-2011

Major necropost, but I am a bit curious - where did "bell" come from? I don't doubt it's part of game lore, but I can't for the life of me recall where it's from. I'm chiefly curious because I see roleplayers being corrected for using the term "hour" and all sorts of verbal acrobatics being used to avoid the terms "second", "minute", and "year", when "hour" and "year" are confirmed in the in-game handbook on time to be completely canon terms. And, well, if "hour" is canon... Why not minutes and seconds? They're all part of the same base-60 system and it's not like we're given any other term to use.

As I thought all this, I realized I couldn't for the life of me remember where "bell" even came from. A friend informed me that they seemed to think it came from some NPC dialogue in the Limsa-only beta and just sort of stuck with the RP community, but neither of us are positive about that. Does anyone remember the source? Which NPC / mission CS / quest has an NPC using the term? I'd like to go confirm its usage since I have a sneaking suspicion it's either slang, peculiar to a certain dialect, or perhaps does not even refer to hours at all, but is the Eorzean equivalent of "o'clock"; for example, from an IC perspective if it is now the eighth bell, then in two hours it will be the tenth bell.

I can't be sure of this, so if anyone can remember where the term "bell" came from and can point me to where it's used, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - River - 05-29-2011

I've run across many cutscenes and NPCs that use it, though at the moment I couldn't give you exact examples. I'll write 'em down as I come across them.
