Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Kylin - 05-29-2011 *Just* stumbled across this by accident and thought of this thread. So here it is! It was from my path companion at the start of the R38 main story quest. Warning: Spoiler text for the start of R38 mission. Nothing significant though. Granted, I'm pretty sure I've seen "hour" used as a term as well. So it's probably fair to use both hour and bell interchangeably. Same with sun and day. Or at least, I've never cared if I see someone using the different words. Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Verence - 05-30-2011 Hey, there's what I'm looking for! Thanks for the screencap. While I can't bring to mind any instance of 'day' being used in dialogue... even if it isn't, I just can't bring myself to stress over stuff that small. My chief interest is digging up the precise nuances of word use in the hopes it might shed some light on the culture or language of Eorzea. Looks like both "hour" and "bell" are confirmed canon, but I wonder if they're 100% interchangeable or if one's somehow less formal or preferred in writing or something odd like that. I'm sure I'm over-thinking it, but these sorts of things have always interested me. I certainly won't say no to further examples of the usage of hour vs bell if anyone finds more to share. Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Verence - 06-04-2011 Probably nobody cares but obsessive types (me), but there is an instance of "day" being used in NPC dialogue. Not necessarily as a discrete unit of time as much as part of a colloquialism, but hey. Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Merri - 09-14-2011 So, I finally re-read over some of the latest posts on the Lodestone, and I had previously overlooked that they actually gave us the year FFXIV is currently in. It states that the Garlean Empire conquered Ala Mhigo in 1557, thirty-six years after the empire's founding. So, it's safe to say the empire came into existence in 1521, and the current year is 1572 of the Six Astral Era. ...Figured it's at least a worth noting, since actual years can now be referenced. Whether it's for past events, birthdays, etc. Unless this has already slipped by in lore and I've completely overlooked it until now. Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Eva - 09-14-2011 Just read through the last couple pages of this and found an instance some time ago where the word "months" was used instead of "moons", so I believe both are also canon, unless S-E comes back and changes it at some point. I think I took a screencap of it but I'm not on my home PC right now - I'll edit this post later to include it if I still have it. In 'Kobold and the Beautiful' at the end when you are receiving your reward, Nolan says: "...On the other hand, ten score tonzes of ore could not simply have vanished into thin air." I think we can probably safely assume that a tonz is the Hydaelyn equivalent for a ton. |
