Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - River - 08-24-2010 So, as far as I can tell, this discussion hasn't been brought up yet. If it has, please feel free to direct me to the thread. This is one of those nitpicky little things that I always seem obsessed over. How are time and measurements calculated in Eorzea, how do they translate to our own, and how will the role-play community deal with them? From what I can tell so far, time seems to be very similar to Vana'diel. There are months (astral moons), days (suns), and years. There are hours (bells), and minutes. 1 bell is roughly equivalent to 3 Earth minutes. 1 sun is a little over one Earth hour. The math has already been done on a few Eorzea clock out there, so if you guys find more precise calculations, please let me know. I'm pretty sure that they aren't going by Vana'diel's exact system. Also, does anyone know what malms and yalms are equivalent to? Miles and Yards? Finally, as a point of discussion: When role-playing, do you usually use Earth time as a reference, or Hydaelyn time? ---------------------------------------------------------- THINGS LEARNED Hour = Bell Day = Sun (24 Bells in a Sun : or 4 cycles of 6 elemental hours) Month = Moon (32 Suns in a Moon : or 4 cycles of 8 Suns) Year = Year (12 Moons in a Year) Day Bells of the day. << 0:00 - 1:00 - 2:00 - 3:00 - 4:00 - 5:00 - 6:00 - 7:00 - 8:00 - 9:00 - 10:00 - 11:00 - 12:00 - 13:00 - 14:00 - 15:00 - 16:00 - 17:00 - 18:00 - 19:00 - 20:00 - 21:00 - 22:00 - 23:00 >> Moons 1st Astral Moon : Halone (Ice) 1st Umbral Moon : Menphina (Ice) 2nd Astral Moon : Thaliak (Water) 2nd Umbral Moon : Nymeia (Water) 3rd Astral Moon : Llymlaen (Wind) 3rd Umbral Moon : Oschon (Wind) 4th Astral Moon : Byregot (Lightning) 4th Umbral Moon : Rhalgr (Lightning) 5th Astral Moon : Azeyma (Fire) 5th Umbral Moon : Nald'thal (Fire) 6th Astral Moon : Nophica (Earth) 6th Umbral Moon : Althyk (Earth) Years the year of the navigator, of the wanderer, of the builder, of the destroyer, of the warden, of the Traders, of the matron, of the Keeper, Of the Fury, of the Lovers, of the Scholar, and of the Spinner Each twelve years is an epoch of man. If I spend several hours roleplaying, it's gonna be hard to explain that my character hung out at a bar for many days. I just don't see way of doing it completely consistent, so time will be depending on what is happening, what I'm doing, what the people I'm with thinks, etc. Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Trizzip - 08-24-2010 Keir Wrote:Also, does anyone know what malms and yalms are equivalent to? Miles and Yards? Yes, that is correct. Also, a Fulm is a foot Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Kejira - 08-24-2010 1st Month is called 1st Astral Moon 2nd Month is called 1st Umbral Moon and so one, theres 12 in all 6 Astral Moons and 6 Umbral Moons with 32 Days in each Moon every Odd Month is called an "Astral Moon" and every Even Moon is called "Umbral Moon" Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Mycroft - 08-24-2010 It's a quite entertaining system.. Except for the Fulms, Malms and Yalms. Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - River - 08-24-2010 Am editing my top post as information is added. Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Gavriel - 08-24-2010 This is excellent! Finally, something other than miles and meters... Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Shamadconde - 08-24-2010 I was wrong. Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - River - 08-24-2010 That's what's from a screenshot, but I took it straight from the Beta and it's different. Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Shamadconde - 08-24-2010 Well I do know Rhalgr is the 6th umbral moon. Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - River - 08-24-2010 Hmm. Maybe it's different depending on the sun you use. I'll change it. Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Kejira - 08-24-2010 Shamad Conde Wrote:Well I do know Rhalgr is the 6th umbral moon. Maybe they changed whats in the beta after that was posted on the Wiki, i'm looking at creating char part where you chose a nameday and it's as Keir says Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - River - 08-24-2010 Kejira Wrote:Shamad Conde Wrote:Well I do know Rhalgr is the 6th umbral moon. It's true. I've tried it every way I can think of. They must have changed the months around. Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Shamadconde - 08-24-2010 Ya. I just looked too. Oops. I guess they did change it. Need to slap the wiki. BRB. Edit: Done! I just noticed they follow that chart you use when you choose a deity. Re: Time and Measurements in Hydaelyn - Asyria - 08-24-2010 I think using Eorzean terminology would allow for more immersion but the days simply go WAY too fast to use the actual Eorzean time with any sort of accuracy. So I'd say like. "see you in 3 bells" and it would mean 3 real time hours, for example. |
