Sorry, new to FFXIV RP. But this is the first I've come across this and now I've seen it mentioned multiple times.

White Mages aren't a thing in Eorzea? Are Black Mages? This seems confusing.

It's complicated. They are things in the game. The main-character (aka, you the player) can become one. ...your average person in the world cannot.

Okay, that's better. I mean, the player characters of the world are heroes, right? So it's feasible that there are enough new Warriors of Light or whatever they are to be called in 2.0 that can become these white/ black mages. Still, to anyone who hasn't attained that level of skill or mastery in magic, they would appear quite powerful/ special?

Just trying to think how my Scholar would react to a white mage/ black mage.

The lore devs did touch on this and state that the MSQ is written with one special person in mind, it just happens that we are all playing that one special person. But there is technically speaking, in the story, only one warrior of light. It would get awkward in RP real fast if everyone played out the storyline IC, so by far the most people do not RP as the hero of light.
It all makes sense from the perspective of wanting to tell a good videogame story, we all enjoy playing games with good stories where we are the hero or the enemy etc. and not just average joe.

Also if a black mage every surfaces (in a way that isnt the job quest) they would likely be hunted down, because of how dangerous it is considered to be etc. I would suggest reading up on it, I am 99% sure sounsyy summarized it somewhere.. If I find it I'll come back and link it here (unless I am beaten to it)

So Scorpio should be terrified or in disbelief if anyone claims to actually be a black mage.... and in awe or disbelief if they are a white mage? Hmmn, that seems rather unfair to RP'ers if they simply want to RP as their chosen job class.

It is a bit. Some of the other jobs have hardships with that too. Dragoons are basically Ishgard-licensed dragon killers and the player is the first person to not have the "you're fighting for Ishgard" requirement.

You literally absorb all the powerful aether as a monk.

Summoners happend to "get lucky" with finding their soulstones. And because killing a primal is nigh impossible without Hydaelyn's Blessing (so you don't get tempered/die), their chances of being around when a primal dies is pretty rare. (Doable, but let's say under the 1%).

The scholar quest has you find -one particular Scholar of Nym-'s soulstone. And his fairy.

The player is the -only- non-Padjal White Mage.

The player is the -first- Black Mage since they were all killed off.

...the list could go on for mostly everything but BRD, PLD and WAR, which have NPCs who actively will teach anyone who wants to learn. The other jobs all pull that "you are the super special main character" thing. Some are slightly easier to bend to be "lore-friendly", like finding a SMN or SCH stone. Or being trained as a Paladin, Bard or Warrior. White and Black magic are described as incredibly rare because of their implications and ability to basically destroy the world.

On that last one if you really want to be technical, they're all 3-star crafts.

The demimateria would be a pain to get but yes.

Those demimateria come from weapons that somehow magically appear when a primal is killed. Assuming a primal is summoned no more than 3 times (NM, HM and EM), and the HM is the -only- one that drops demimateria-able weapons (because they're only Ifrit, Garuda, Titan and Mog iirc?), it's basically impossible. BUT THEY'RE PRETTY. AND PLAYERS WOULD WANT THEM

Honestly, people should be allowed to play whatever they want. If you want to play your job class go ahead. Though do be aware there are those who may not appreciate it. However. It is your character, not their's. Enjoy your time in the game. If you want to play that character go ahead and do it. While I don't play a WHM or a BLM icly, I know there are others who do and in fact in game? The community in general doesn't care. There are those here who will get upset, I've seen it. But. In the end this is your character and you're welcome to play what you want. Not everyone will want to rp with it, but you gotta find your own sort of people who will accept it.

Do know though that white magic and black magic aren't things that you would want to flaunt in public because of the Mage Wars. Even if there wasn't a stigma against WHM to begin with, the fact that black mages and white mages caused a big situation would not be something kindly looked upon.

Basically just keep in mind that there are some who may not agree to the way you play, but play it how you want regardless. They don't have to rp with you afterall, and they shouldn't be forcing their view onto you. If they do, just kindly excuse yourself. You are the one paying for your sub, not them. At the same time people shouldn't try to force their view onto others and expect others to rp with them. Smile

Just takes too much energy and I feel it limits myself to play that way. So yeah, knowing this, I understand now how/why mages would be regarded the way they are.

Reminds me a bit of how mages are treated in the Dragon Age world, but worse. I can understand why anyone on Eorzea would fear or be wary of them, a near world ending experience would affect cultures for generations. I personally plan on playing as a Scholar, but this helps me learn how other RP'ers will react and why I might run into resistance in places. It also helps me with forming my own creative backgrounds or how my character might react to others.

So all of your input is invaluable to me, I greatly appreciate it.

I've been rping since I was 15, I'm almost 32 now and I've played a lot of freeform and tabletop rp (White Wolf). Both of which have stated "These are the rules, you may choose to discard what will enhance your game", now while I personally still prefer to act within lore there are some things I am willing to bend on. In the end it's your gaming experience.

On the topic of mages, they are at the fault of their ancestors and predecessors. They screwed things up and created a war, so those types of things are going to be eyed with very clear hesitation. Even BLM is pretty nefarious as you will later see should you play it.

As for being a Scholar; I don't think you'd have much problems rping one. Honestly a "Scholar" is a student. Even the definition of "scholar";

schol·ar
ˈskälər/Submit
noun
a specialist in a particular branch of study, especially the humanities; a distinguished academic.

Explains that it's a specialist, other definitions just refer to them as a student of whatever career. While yes this is a real world explanation, that much you can probably pull into your RP. Now the Scholars themselves for XIV are people who study the nymian art of magic. Something that will explain fully later and I don't want to spoil it.

The way you get your soul stone is more plausible than some of the other stones which are decidedly harder but there could be possible ways to get the others if you sit down and seriously think it over.

You're also, much welcome. Smile Glad I could help.

RE: White Mage/Black Mage there are those of us that will simply believe you mad, and make our exit, choosing to distance ourselves from it, if we feel that there was no effort put into the reasoning, i.e. I want to be a white mage cause the Job is available OOC.

However, I myself run on the: is it feasible? would it work? did effort go into coming up with a concept that whilst not adhering to the lore doesn't fly in the face of it. If so, bring it on!

with Scholar, I think of it as this:

Nako is a scholar (little s) he studies all forms of arcane power, though can only wield a few. He is not, however, a Scholar (big S) as he does not have a soulstone, nor know the practical applications of summoning a Fairy.

However, Scholar is indeed one of the easier ones to RP as, as Jobs go.

That's a really good way to go with it and I'd have to agree with both of these points, Nako'li.

It's something I've been considering with C'sien myself because she does study conjury and arcanum but leans heavily into being alchemist. This is not to say that an alchemist is a magic-focused thing

Spoilerie: considering the lala in thaum story that doesn't have an aetheric ability, can study alchemy.
So in a way I'd say she's more of a 'scholar' myself rather than Scholar. She doesn't understand how to summon a fairy but she does now various schools of magic. This being said, she refuses to deal with Thaumaturgy either. Too nefarious for her, in her mind.

Thaumaturgy itself isn't nefarious. It is rooted in death, true, but that is also because the school of magic formed from the funeral rites of the Order of Nald'thal.

The Fairies are so pretty. I really do want an IC way to have one as a companion, it will just take a lot of thought.

Your character finds a soulstone somehow, or a teaching scroll/tablet from Nym that instructs on the methodology?

it's that simple really. It's just the circumstances that might require more probing.

Big Grin

Oh yes, but I'm also addressing it from a character's perspective.
BLM is actually the 'nefarious' aspect, but for the character she'd still be hesitant in learning anything thaumaturgy related. Goody-goody lawful good. Bleh~
