The Disgaea series, for example, is one that I tried initially... and then just went and looked up LPs for the story because I wasn't going to grind the same map for three hours to get Laharl to level 900. I picked up both the original Disgaea and Disgaea 3 on their release dates and never finished either of them.
The most important part of an RPG, I think, is the story. And, if presented properly, you can enjoy it just as much as an LP as you could playing it yourself. Better, even, if it's horribly grindy or has clunky controls/mechanics. It's how I experienced NieR, for example. WONDERFUL story, very touching moments, but laced with Cavia hatred.
... You just have to find LPers that aren't obnoxious to watch/read/listen to.
Bastion is one of my favorite games ever and the first game I point to if the "are games art?" topic comes up. Hell, I voiced my alt after Ruks because holy shit, he makes the game what it is.
Also, Chip Cheezum's LP of MGR made me buy the game when it came out on Steam, hands-down.
