Unfortunately, the best option will indeed be either the Market Board or examining another player and trying on what they have. On the plus side, you CAN try on multiple pieces at once. On the dressing room screen, there is an icon with a little push pin. Clicking that will make the game "remember" what pieces you have tried on thus far and only replace them if you try on something else that takes up that slot or you deselect the push pin icon.
There's also a Tumblr or three out there, I think, where they have screenshots of various outfits and list the pieces needed to get that look. Don't know them offhand, though. Still, hope all this helps!
