I'd agree with the others and say you just had a rough start and it's about to get a lot better. I used the RPC as a springboard to dive into the rp community here, and I can honestly say after getting to know some of the people here that out of a half dozen MMOs I've rped in, FFXIV has by far been the best experience I've had. You're in good hands.
I definitely second the recommendation to jump into a making connections thread when you get a chance. And don't be shy about responding to other people's threads if something really catches your eye.
I too have enjoyed my time thus far! I always like to meet interesting people and lets face it. The weird stuff we encounter just adds that much more to the encounter!
