When things go wrong for them, it's a lot like watching a close friend get kicked in the nuts, and it's hard not to care, even if it's not a real person.
About 4 or 5 years ago when I was really new to RP and I didn't really understand much about it, I had gotten my character into a relationship and got WAAAAY to involved, I totally messed up a lot of stuff, I actually ended up quitting the game which was probably a good thing (it was WoW, only played 4 months, THANK GOD!)
I certainly learned my lesson, I think everyone gets too involved in their characters at least once in a while, it's hard not to, especially when you are on for long periods of time.
