I agree with Rock on this one. Put down Michael, but then just ask to be called Mike. That even adds a level of immersion to the game, having to tell people every time they use your full name. 
That said, there are always exceptions to lore, and Mike is even reasonably close to a run-of-the-Lore-mill name. You wouldn't be offending anyone if you stuck with Mike and had an IC reason.
